To melt the bottle, or the contents? ;)

You would think people would stop using the microwave for non-food purposes after an old woman blew up her wet cat inside one

My apartments smoke detector only goes off when steam from the bathroom hits it. We've filled the apt full of smoke without it peeping, but if I take a shower and leave the bathroom door open, it goes nuts.

I've had that happen several times too.

..........

I figured ten minutes would do the job ten times better than one minute.

Mine detects steam and/or heat but not smoke. If I use the oven, 350 is okay, 400 might set it off and anything over 400 is guaranteed to. The kids use the smoke detector as a signal that dinner is ready :)

But I don't cook sweatbands in the microwave!!

Hey, it did the job of getting your wife a new microwave. Hope you bought her the deluxe model, after that! :)

lol you know you could be on to something here...Slippy, are you sure YOU put it in for 10 minutes...maybe someone (I'm not pointing fingers here), snuck in and reset the microwave so that it would appear that YOU are to blame and they could get a new appliance? I'm not trying to say that your wife is that sneaky but if the stove or refrigerator mysteriously breaks here soon, I'd be asking questions. ;)

Next time, simply set the microwave to "Headband" instead of "Popcorn" or whatever you had it set on.

It seems the photoelectric ones are better nearer the kitchen, they shouldn't go off(as the ionization ones do) as often which is why folks take out the batteries.

This article should explain more, but it is better IMO to pay more money for these ones, rather than the ionization detectors.//chemistry.about.com/cs/howthingswork/a/aa071401a.htm

It was more likely the elastic in the headband than the fabric. That wouls account for the soot Slip mentioned.

My darn smoke detector goes off everytime I use my oven. What's that tell you about my cooking? Actually, the seal needs replaced again.

me too....my husband asked if I new they had 'timers' I didn't have to use the smoke detector....funny thing is it only happens when I use the broiler and nothing is burning!!!

pardon the hijack but I have a question about the detectors and this article...as I stated earlier in the post, two of the detectors in my house have started to "chirp". I assumed it was a dying battery and the article also mentions this, (I replaced the batteries and they stop for a little while but within a month or so it was chirping again) BUT should it actually still do that since it is also hooked to the house power supply AND a battery? Doesn't seem like it should but could be a safety feature....anyone know? Really appreciate anyone help.
