I am shooting a wedding this weekend and my 20D is my backup camera. I wanted to use both cameras to shoot with different lenses. Now, I only have my 40D for the wedding this Saturday. I'm not sure what to do.
I updated the firmware, checked the contacts, and nothing... I can manually focus, but I prefer not to have to do that. Anyone have any ideas? I am 3000 miles away from home. I am in South Florida...
Any help would be appreciated!!!

To say the obvious, you have checked the lens is set correctly?

Look for a rental would be my best suggestion, if you are in or near a major populated area.
There may be a dust bunny on the lens to the focusing system. Have you tried different focusing modes and get the same result?

Try going to the menu and go to the function to clear all cameras settings. It has fixed it for me many times

I tried out a few different lenses. I checked the connectors, everything SEEMS very clean. Can't rent a camera - wouldn't be able to return it (as I leave at 6am on Sunday). I guess I will have to manually focus if my 40D goes bunk. I can do it... I just really don't want to. Bah! :)
Thanks everyone! |

If you have to manual focus, make sure that your viewfinder diopter adjustment is set right for your eye. It's difficult to accurately focus in low light, so I hope that all goes well for you with this. If you make known where you are, there may be another DPC'er close by who will help you out with this situation.

I am in Hollywood Beach, FL... shooting in North Miami. I can't have a 2nd shooter at the wedding - the couple isn't comfortable with it (they are friends of mine, and prefer that it's only me). I am not sure anyone else could help.
Once it's 9am, I'm going to call some local camera stores to see if they have any suggestions. I have time late tonight to play with the diopter and adjust it. :) I may just switch lenses on my 40D and not worry about it... I just didn't want to have to do that... for convenience and speed. Ya know :) |

Robert, Yakatme lives nearby. You might PM him for local knowledge about the best local places to get help. He takes his cameras to a shop in Miami for repairs, and they may be able to check or fix yours quickly if they know that you need it for a wedding this weekend.

I called tons of camera shops, and everyone of of them said I need to send it to canon... it may be a sub-mirror pin issue or something. I have a warranty, so I'll send it when I get back to LA.
Oh well, such is life! I'll do great anyhow :) |

I did this with my 40D on Saturday. The auto focus was slow at best and what I kept noticing was the the camera would signal the picture was in focus, it would look in focus thru the view finder, but when taken the picture looked out of focus. At first I thought UV filter, lens smudges, or camera shake. In the end I reset all the functions, and presets and presto things were back to normal. I can't imagine what changed but it worked. |
