Ok, I'm probably a long way off taking a pic I really want to frame. I tried to find a diy thread here but to no avail. I did read lots of mentions about 'mats' any chance of a 2 paragraph tutorial anyone?

Not exactly what you want,,but you can get an idea of what needs to be done.

Please do John, this is all new to me, I don't even know what material you would use for a 'mat' or even if its required?

I could probably throw together a how to on framing. To start you'll need the following:
Accurate rulers (very important because being off just a little is bad)
Miter saw (powered is much better)
Router (at least 2hp) and a table with a good fence
Shop vac (unless you don't mind being covered in saw dust)
Router bits (the more the better, and not the cheapy ones)
Hand sander (sand paper takes forever)
Good wood glue
Square clamp large enough for the frame you want
Patience
Straight wood (very very important) |

These pictures don't do the frame justice, but here's 3 that we've made:
Sultry Framed
Wisdom Framed
Desert Haze Framed
I have more now, but haven't taken pictures yet. |

To be quite honest with you, if you plan to buy a Logan mat cutter, the 450 came with a video tape that spent about 5 minutes showing how my particular model works and how to cut. It's relatively painless for simple mats.

I̢۪ve found lots of framing/matting info on the web using google. Usually it̢۪s in the form of HowTo̢۪s or FAQ̢۪s, but still good stuff.
Have a look at Ask Bing on matcutter.com, or the Tips & Ideas menu on americanframe.com.
Also, you could probably find HowTo books on framing and matting at the library.
Good luck!
