Well, I'm in. My original submission was a 4:1 macro but as people I showed it to took more than a couple of seconds to see what it was I reshot it at close up rather than macro, so, now I'm thinking/hoping it will be a close up that wins rather than a 'true' macro ;) |

I would tend to think a superiorly composed picture with context will outscore a picture that merely beats it on zoom factor. |

I looked it up:
"Arthropods are bilaterally symmetrical protostomes with strongly segmented bodies. Segmentation affects both external and internal structure. Some segments are fused to form specialized body regions called tagmata; these include the head, thorax and abdomen, and the process and condition of fusion is called tagmosis. The body is covered with an exoskeleton made up primarily of chitin (a polysaccharide) in a protein matrix; lipids, other proteins, and calcium carbonate also play a role. Primitively, each body segment bears a pair of segmented (jointed) appendages; in all living arthropods, many of these appendages are dramatically modified or even lost. Arthropods generally grow by molting their exoskeletons in a process called ecdysis. Movement of appendages is controlled primarily by a complex muscular system, divided into smooth and striated components as in chordates. Cilia are not present. Most arthropods have a pair of compound eyes and one to several simple ("median") eyes or ocelli; either or both kinds of eyes may be reduced or absent in some groups."
A snail or a slug (gastropoda or mullusca phylum) would be OK, I think, unless the intended effect was for a macro still life. I know I prefer my snails salted. "D

Bump to remind you...
I am starting a contest for this challenge. Whoever gets the blue will get a DPC hat from me. One condition, I am adding JMart's rule into it. Blue ribbon winner will not have bugs, flowers or water. Meaning any kinds of bug life, or plant life and water (liquid, just to be politically correct). Also, there won't be hat if you already got one from me which I count only 5 people so far.
Win a ribbon with these requirements, I will send you a free DPC hat :)

BACK
Ok... good luck everybody ;) |

challenge description Take a macro shot (or at least an extreme close-up) of something that is not a bug or flower. I wonder how many DNMC's there are going to be for people who have gone for the extreme close up! |

Well well well. :D
Look at the blue ribbon winner for this challenge. Not a water shot, roflmao. Two water shots in the top ten at that.
Hail to the water king!
Do I regret not submitting my water shot?
Water shots are not dead here at DPC, just yet. eheh |

Indeed, I about laughed my little behind off when I saw Irene's blue. No hat for anyone. It's a breath taking shot indeed. Jac, I hope you'll still post your water shot, but the straws are pretty cool too.

Yes, I definitely prefer a ribbon to a hat ;-D
Jac, the official challenge description was Macro Without Bugs or Flowers. It's a pity you scrapped your water shot because of this thread but I hope you'll still post it. Btw, I LOVE your straw shot. |

No way did I scrap the idea though. I'm keeping my idea for a later challenge or a free study.
And thanks for the comment on the straw tubular drinking devices shot Irene. Your shot is beautiful and deserved the blue, congrats on that. I have a question. How did you reproduce the bubble so many times like that?
