I want to buy a 4mb or 8mb Mp3 player but I'm not sure which one to get. I use iTunes as my Mp3 player on my computer and I have a combination of regular Mp3's and AAC protected files. I rarely have any WMA files and if I do, I convert them to Mp3. I just want something small enough to wear when I workout and ride my bike. Any recommendations?

If you want to continue to use iTunes, then the iPod is the best route.

As far as I know, no other players are supported on iTunes, and iPods are the only devices that play ACC files downloaded from iTunes. But that's OK since iPods are awesome.

The 4 GB or 8 GB Nanos are good for working out and other activities.

I have to agree with scarbrd about the ipods... Everyone in my family uses them, from the shuffle to the new itouch, IMO they are the best.

Thanks for the suggestions! Does anyone have any experience with the Zune players?

I don't have experience with a Zune, but I can tell you NOT to buy an RCA Opal. I bought an 8gb one for Andre for Christmas, and it's not user friendly at all. We struggled with it for three months and finally I just bought him an iPod nano and he is very happy now.

as much as i would love to have one of these, it's quite out of my budget. :( i was thinking more along the lines of a Nano or something similar.

The ipod nano is great. Even my Dad, who is in his mid 70s has one and loves it.

If you want to continue to use the protected AAC files, then an IPod is what you want. I don't care for the Itunes/IPod duo, myself. I used Itunes for a few years, but the first thing I would always do is to burn an audio CD and then re-rip them to unprotected MP3's. I feel that ITunes has become bloatware in recent years (Personal opinion, your mileage may vary). I buy from Amazon now that they have all the majors labels selling unprotected MP3's.

I have a handful of players. The one I use regularly is a 1Gb Creative Zen Stone. (The MuVo T100 is almost the same thing, but in a form factor similar to the original Ipod shuffle and comes in 2 and 4 Gb models) It simply shows up as a drive and I drag and drop my files onto it, in a folder structure of my choosing. No screen, which works well for me. I mostly listen to podcasts while I drive to work, and I can navigate using the skip-folder button. I tried a Sansa Clip for a few days. It was a great player, but you need to look at the screen to navigate the contents. I would highly recommend the Sansa Clip, even though it did not suit my own usage.

I also have a Creative Muvo v100, which uses a AAA battery, instead of a built in Lion. Also one of Best Buy's house brand players in a 4Gb version, with video. It's actually pretty good, especially for the $60 it cost.

The protected AAC files can not be played on anything except the ipod. If you are running iTunes 7.5 or earlier there is a way to convert the Protected AAC files to regular AAC and is actually a legal method. However the Apple issued a Cease and decist order due to another peice of software and no ones solutions are available at the moment.

The old fashioned way is to burn everything to a CD and rip it back to the hard drive the same way you do regular music cds.

Apple however does have alot of music thats now unprotected doesnt help for any oif the stuff you already have however the unprotected stuff can be converted to mp3. I actually just did that tonight found my old player and put a 1gb sd card in it lol.

small, wearable, itunes...sounds like you need the newest addition to the Ipod family. I was against the Ipod name (I hate going with the mainstream lol) but after trying two different ones from another company, I really am glad I finally got my wife and daughter the Ipods...of course my daughter is mad my wife got the newer, more capasity one lol.

We have 3 Zunes and love them. But you want portability when exercising, the Zunes are heavy.

i've owned dozens of mp3 players, and it depends on what is most important to you, honestly.

if you're concerned with ease of use, then go with an iPod
if you're concerned with audio quality, get a zune or a creative zen
if you're concerned with low price, get a sandisk sansa view or fuzion.

if you don't mind not using iTunes, i would recommend the 8gb or 16gb creative zen. it sounds much better than any ipod, is quite pocketable, not too bad on the budget, and it'll play video if the mood strikes you. also has a nice screen and an fm tuner.

Audio quality better on the Zune? Over the iPod? Are you talking about the quality of the ear buds or the device itself?

I've never beeen a big fan of earbuds in general so I always listen on my Bose headphones, or my Shure over the ear buds. Hard to beleive the Zune could sound better.

device itself. tested with a pair of V-Moda Vibes, and a set of Grado SR-80.
zune's frequency reproduction and output power is much better than any ipod (save for the 2nd generation nano, the third generation uses a newer, lower power audio chip).
Zune no doubt sounds superior to my ears, though i suppose to each their own.
i'd still have a Creative's sound reproduction over either Apple or Microsoft, though.

ETA: if you have a best buy or other electronics giant near you, go in with a pair of your own headphones and try out the zune. if you're after sound quality, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I've seen a number of very positive reviews of the 2nd generation Zunes. The biggest problem with it is that Apple is still a step ahead with features. My son-in-law has a first gen Zune (The Soviet military style) and he loves it. But he also loves Vista...

I have a second generation ZUNE (as well as a FIRST generation dell DJ if anyone even knows what that is lol!) It's okay but it has no bells and whistles at all. It accomplishes the bare minimum and thats about it. It doesn't feel sleek and it uncomfy to hold. I hate itunes though so I stuck with zune.
Operationally its fine. On another note if your computer has the cahones Vista is great! People say it is horrible and I used to as well. However, I hadn't really tried it.... I wanted DX10 so I upgraded and after a few minutes of getting used to the changes I was comfortable.
