I don't know about a negative option, but you can also convert to a negative using curves. Pull the right hand side down and the left side up. so that instead of a /, you have a \. Or vice versa -- don't remember exactly.
I *think* that is what I've read. |

I wonder how many people will be dragging challenge images into their photo-editing software to see how much the original was "treated" -- if that makes sense. |

Those of us proudly owning a Mac will only type ctrl-alt-cmd-8 (if the keyboard preferences are set properly) |

I rather think thats silly (especially if its not done to all 300+ shots) - the whole purpopse of this challenge is to take a photo that works well as a NEGATIVE not one that works well as a positive at least that was -my- understanding? - feh, i had hoped my image wouldnt flop as much as it has already- and its only the 1st 7 hrs of voting.
I rather -hope- people will view mine in 'positive' form at this point- it might make my 'scores' go up rather than down *Pftt*
*goes back to her - I LIKE MY IMAGE and that is why i submitted it thoughts; happy place, Low voters can't destroy my happy luv my photo-that is whyh i submitted it -happy place* :P

No, you are right. But it is interesting to invert a few to see what they looked like originially. NOT to vote on it as a positive but to peek at what post-processing might have been. |

can you honestly say it won't influence your final choice tho? :) I know looking at the image previously would influence me subconsciously- since i may like the positive better than the negative - also a lot of these images i'm assuming / guessing are going to be processed specificially for viewing in negative form notsomuch in positive form? -
i dunno i'm still new here -mabe i should quit while i'm still 'average' ? afterall the 1's and 2's voters don't seem to offer any useful suggestions anywhere that I have seen on ppls images ? just a message of 'your image is (as the scale says) bad' with a low 1 or 2 score? hrm..

Personally, I don't vote in challenges I enter because I might 'subconsciously' vote another image low. But really, each voter has a vote. If they want to use it to judge an image in its positive form and this was their grading scale, what can you do? All images are there to invert. You shouldn't worry too much, be happy with the image you created and let it ride.
Stop worrying about your score being average. This site is much more than scores. It's community and comments and constructive criticism.

I like mine better as a negative than a postive, so hopefully folks won't try to check out the positive. Which is boring. Come to think of it, the negative is boring too. But prettier! :-) |

???! What the heck does the image 'positive' have to do with this challenge (besides curiosity)? I thought the challenge was 'Negative'? Judge the results, not the process. Geesh. |

ahh but i don't see those dolling out 2's and 1' and 3's offering up constructive critisisim? :( infact on some of the higher rated images that have recieved 1's and 3's i dont' see any kind of comments that would suggest the dolling out of such a low score? (perhaps someone in the voting pool is lowering other peoples scores in order to up their own? i hate to think it but it has occurred to me its a possibility?)
I have yet to see a photo deserving of a 1 - is there a formula i should be using that i'm not? I don't doll out 1's and 2's to any images thus far... should I be? (I generally try to look at the image as the photographer might have been thinking of it at the time of the shot...what were they looking at...why is the focus just so? why are the colors this particular way rather than sepia or B&W or whatever the case may be... what is so interesting about this specific image that made them choose it over the millions of other things they could have shot? etc... in the challenges i have entered so far i've given out a lot of 10's and 9's and 8's and 7's - i think the lowest i scored anyone was a 5? and i keep going back with fresh eyes to look over my 'choices' previously and more times than not my scores raise for those images rather than fall..maybe that's part of whats killing my own score huh? *maybe i should abstain from voting in this challenge...*) |

I too had a similar thought that it was a 'negative' challenge having nothing to do withthe positive...
I guess we'll all find out in a few days if people judged it based on the 'negative state' or if they judged it based on the positive? (comments may tell? or scores... hrm)

I have been here for a little under 2 years and haven't been active in a few months. You will find there has been A LOT of discussion about how others vote, what scale to use and forcing people to add a comment when voting low. Here's my take on it:
1) Each voter can use the scale however they want. If you want to hand out 5's and above and never use 1-4, that's your choice. Some voters only hand out one 10 for the challenge. Some voters use the entire scale, giving out as many 1's as 10's. Personally, I hardly ever give a 3 or below unless the photo is really off the challenge mark. I also do not give many 9's and 10's. The KEY is that if each voter is consistent about using their scale on every image they vote in a challenge, it will be equal and fair across the board. Because most people don't vote on every image, yes, it's possible that a voter who gives lots of 1's hits you and not me. In the end, I feel it all equals out. Typically there are at least 100 people voting on your image during the week and I think the system is level and fair. Each voter gets one vote and can use it and the rating scale as they chose. You can use whatever formula or grading scale you want, just be consistent and use the same scale for every image in the challenge you vote on!
2) Yes, it stinks to get a low score. It stinks even more to get a low score with no comments. It is a fact of life on DPC. Many ppl have proposed systems (being forced to leave a comment on a 1,2 or 3 score, etc) but in the end, DPC has stayed the same. You have placed your image in a challenge to be voted, and the voter has the choice not to leave a comment.
3) There is some sort of screening limit ppl call a vote scrubber. I don't know how it works, I think it is automatic...maybe not. At the end of a challenge votes can get thrown out if a voter has submitted suspicious votes (e.g. voting 1's on all images except a few). This is evident at rollover when a challenge ends - your score might jump up or down based on some votes being tossed. It will also go up or down at the rollover if that guy who gave you a 10 didn't vote on 20% of the images, you'll lose that 10 vote. I think the DPC council works hard to operate this site in a fair manner and eliminate biased voting. |

I think i like the having to leave a comment for scores between 1 and 3 = how else will the person improve?and how else will the reciver of the 1-3 vote not get discouraged and just quit (as someone else said its a community/critique place and shouldn't we be trying to help eachother improve our art? - and or how will they know how to meet another persons grading score for future challenges? - is there a scrubbing system for the 1's and such when a user gives them out in abundance and seems to just be trying to reach the 20% rather than actually 'looking at and grading the images'? it would be interesting to learn more about how this all works - ie: what is the average time someone spends looking at an image before they vote on it? an do they tend to go back and change their votes at he end? 'random thoughts' |

That's kind of how I feel. But the image is there to invert (quite easily, it seems, if you own a Mac) and I can't help but think that some voters might be inclined to look at the positive. A really impressive negative image that, when inverted, shows green skies and blue trees might somehow be deemed inferior to one that looks perfectly normal when inverted.
I don't have an opinion much either way -- my positive suffered some from the negative processing, and for whatever reason, so is my score. No comments, of course.
