What if DPC added a third type of membership and challenge?
It would cost more to be a member of this third type but the winners could win cash or 'prizes'.
The more expensive memberships could pay 'for' the 'prizes' though the revenue generated.
I'm sure DPC staff could find stores that would donate 'prizes' 'for' the free advertizment. (I'm sure this sight generates a lot of page hits.)
The 'challenges' could be a week or a month.... whatever.... get creative!

Ummmm......NAH! Enough other sites that give away 'prizes'. there is enough competetiveness around here already 'for' the virtual ribbon. You are going to hear this a million times. why ruin something that already is damn decent as is?

Plus, it's good not to have ads all over the place :) |

:)There isn't a 'DPC Staff' that can go around to stores.
Right now theres enough incentive just to get a ribbon.
I think it would be a good idea but.... sometime in the future.

I think it's a good idea but not 'for' this site. There are loads of sites that do that already. I like the fact that this site is about photography & the joy of it & nothing else. Besides, the DQ's would shoot thru the roof. 'For' a while, there were a lot of DQ's & you don;t really win anything. Imagine if you did win something tangible like a prize or cash. Things would get out of hand, IMO.

In theory a good idea, but I don't think turn out would be so hot...
Prize enough 'for' me right now is top 25 in a challenge. While I'm shooting 'for' higher, I'm also a realist and a NOOB!

Why would we want to take something that is so much fun and ruin it? I truly believe that if you dangled a carrot in front of some people, they will bite your hand to get that carrot... |

I get so frustrated by people who can't have a discussion without being hostile toward the idea. I wish people could be more constructive and or articulate in thier disagreements.
Thank you Rooster, Justine, Russel2566 'for' being cool about your disagreement.

Some people also get frustrated when others raise issues/suggestions which have been frequently and thoroughly discussed in the past, without doing some elementary research first.
If you go to the main forums page (in the menu as Community > Forums) and go to the bottom of the page you will find a search box. Enter the word "prize" and do a search, read a few of the 20 or 30 threads you find listed, and then come back to this thread with some new and original ideas or perspectives which will address and alleviate the problems which have prevented implementation of something like this already.
Otherwise, a frustrated tone is to be somewhat expected even if not particularly pleasant to experience.
This is true of almost every issue raised here ... but we haven't figured out a way to force people to see if there's an old thread on a topic before they start a new one. |

I like it they way it is - except perhaps on open challenge with advanced editing.
'For' a $ deal, try //groups.yahoo.com/group/Photo_Contests_and_Critiques/?yguid=152793643.
Small group, and I am showing a profit there!

Maybe if we gave them a prize 'for' doing so?
(ducking)

Well, see, that's just the kind of original analytical thinking we need. |

I'm sorry, I've re-read my response and those of the others here several times now and can not find one instance where anyone was being hostile. I myself simply asked a question. Isn't that a way to add to a discussion? |

Hey man, you're proving my point. I haven't been on this site long and don't know my way around forums.
If it has been raised in the past I am sorry. If you've weighed in on it areadly why not just leave the post die and drop off instead of being all hostile and sarcastic. Next time you get pissed at a situation like this please just post a link to it.
There are kind and positive ways to say the same things. Thank you 'for' telling me about the search thing.

Most people don't like the idea of having cash or other real 'prizes' on this site. I too like it the way it is in that regard. If there were monetary or other 'prizes' I think this site would suffer. In the mean time, if once in a while, there could be a random draw 'for' a prize, not tied to scores, that would be nice. I'm sure the admins would have no problem getting any number of camera manufacturers to donate a small gift in exchange 'for' a "Sponsored By" link. As long as the site doesn't become inundated with ads.

I think you're misunderstanding the General, Joel. He was just pointing out why you maybe got some less than helpful responses. 'For' the most part people around here are aaaight, unless you're talking about religion, politics, or sexual preference.
This one has come up a few times, but you wouldn't be the first (or second, third, fourth, fifth...) to ask about it.
Welcome to the site. I like your Pisces pic BTW (bein a pisces and all)

If you think General E's response to you was hostile and sarcastic, you have a serious perception problem. In fact, I can't see anything on this thread whatsoever that should prompt your ruffled feathers. Chill!

If people want cash/'prizes' there are other sites that cater 'for' this. Anyway it would only cause more work 'for' the admin staff and they have more than enough to do looking after us! I like this site just the way it is, the ribbons are the holy grail.
Dont worry Joel, we are normally a placid lot....

'Prizes' and tangible awards are always nice. Winning something you can 'show' 'for' your efforts is a pleasing experience. I don't believe that DPChallenge will likely take this route. There are legal issues involved in it that don't always come to the surface in these discussions. I'm not sure if Drew or Langdon have ever posted about these issues and I have not searched the previous threads 'for' them. But I can assure you that it IS a legal can of worms to open 'for' the site administrators.
My personal thoughts about competing 'for' cash and 'prizes' are to do it in a non-online forum. If you do some research, you will likely find photo and art competitions in your local area. Some of these will be opportunities to win 'prizes'. Others may be opportunities 'for' display and recognition. They will likely have entry fees as well..
Good luck in whatever you decide to pursue :)
