True blacks, grays and whites are neutral. However, in the real world, most have a bias tint towards cool or warm. |
PANTONE makes whole families of inks in "Warm Gray" and "Cool Gray" colors.
As was mentioned, pigments (inks) are different from light; in printing you get Blue by mixing Cyan and Magenta inks. |

Let's start with how to spell "spelled." ;)

I thought that this would be an easy straight-forward challenge set - warm vs. cool. Now I am really confused.... warm blacks, cool pinks? |

Warm and Cool
To compare and contrast, I used these two descriptions: "Cool colors are soothing in nature." and "Warm colors are vivid in nature."
So far my choice to go in this direction is not working for my score lol |
Thanks for the link, with a name like ColorCarnival, you should know colors.
My first idea was that this is similar to Fire and Ice in color tones. I think we had a Fire and Ice Challenges before. |

I know I said this in a comment, so if I came across as harsh, sorry!
If yours is the photo I'm thinking of, I do like it--I just don't think it fit the theme "warm colors", and I think I still gave it a 5... |

All colors can have a warm or cool tone to them. The difference being a color of warm tone will have a yellow "base" to it and a cool color will have a blue "base" to it. Back when many developed b&w film...you could choose paper that would be neutral, cool, or warm when developed. Still black and white, but the hint of a yellowish tone produced warm photographs and the hint of blue produced a cool feel to the photograph.
Does this make sense? Example: Red can be neutral, warm or cool in tone, but it's still red, so you can't say a color is either warm or cool based on the color alone, i.e. pink is warm.

Fashion magazines? No, I don't do much reading in that area - probably shows too. But, Bergiecat's statement about adding a yellow base to lend a warm feel to a color vs. adding a blue base to lend a cool feel to a color cool does make some sense. -Thanks |

I find this statement misleading since if you mix red, pink, purple and orange, then they aren't red, pink, purple and orange anymore...
That's like me saying that red is warm and you saying that red can be cool if you mix it with blue. But in fact, if you mix red with blue, it's not red anymore... it becomes purple, which is in the middle.

Wha? Please explain yourself. Red and orange as cool colors?
You lost me. |
What is there to explain? A bluish-red is cool, an orangey-red is warm. A crisp bluish-peachy tone is cool, a deeper reddish one is warm. It's all in what the colors are mixed with that makes the cool/warm difference.
Doesn't anyone read Vogue or Cosmo anymore? :) |
My girlfriend buys Cosmo every month. =p Anyway...
Like I said... red is red. Period. If you mix it with blue, then it's not red anymore. It's purple.
I agree with what other said. Green, just like purple, is a controversial color as it's a mixture of a warm (yellow) and a cool (blue).
In any case... orange is the new pink. LOL.

It actually depends on how much blue is mixed with the red for it to be purple.

Exactly, but good luck getting the average DPC voter to understand that. You would be better off keeping it simple so the very basic definition JulietNN put forth would be the best way to go score-wise.

That's a moot point.
The point is that if you mix red with blue, it's not red anymore. So saying that red can be a cool color is still bogus.
It's like saying a square can have three sides but you just have to cut it through the diagonal to do so... it changes what it is altogether and becomes something different already.

But isn't it rare to find a true red? For example a true red would be (in RGB) 255,0,0. Nearly all colorations that are displayed in a photograph are going to be some variation of the true colors, a blend so to speak.
So, IMO, you can have a red that is slightly cooled with a tinge or shading of blue. No, technically it's not officially "red" anymore, but to most people describing it, a slightly tinged red would still be called "red".

There is an argument that says all colours are just the subjective interpretation of different wavelengths of light - i.e. there is no red ;)

Technically, the temperature of light color goes up from red (3,000 K like tungsten light,) toward blue (7,000+ K daylight full sun. ) So it's all subjective observation. Didn't some of you use film before digital?
I agree that the usual way of thinking about it is that "cool" colors are the ones from mid green toward violet, and the warm colors are the other end of the spectrum toward deep orange to near infra red. That's the way that I shot for the challenge anyway.

True. But if it's predominantly red, it's still warm. The only point I'm driving at here is that there's no such thing as a cool red. Once you get to the point that it's not warm, then no one has any business calling it red anymore.
I guess if people still want to argue that red can be cool, all they have to do is show a cool red. No, not a violet... not a purple... not a magenta... but a red... a cool red.

If my car were clean I'd take a picture of it. It's red with a blue undertone so on the cool side. (in more ways than one. ;o))
