This statement is curious, coming as it does from someone who has been sanctioned multiple times for retaliatory comments and PMs in reply to constructive criticism.
Originally posted by hahn23: I gave up long ago trying. Sorry for my weakness. Joke/disparaging comments are "tolerated and encouraged" by the SC. This is wrong! 501 joke comments are not worth 1 constructive criticsm. When is the healing of the inflicted damage going to take place. I've noticed that the application of penalties is not uniformly applied. The people who are funny are allowed great latitude. Other members are simply punished. It's not right! |
I'll say this again slowly.
He is replacing the comments with constructive comments on all 501 entries.

And, I'll say this slowly, too. There has been no change for many days. I'll report back here when something positive happens. In the interim, the abomination remains.

Try making 501 constructive comments and see how long it takes you.
As I said in my reply to your email, and in my reply to the post, give him until the end of the challenge.

FWIW it only took him a few minutes to put the DNMC on 501 entries. And then again he changed that to the current comment which is The Date with the jester again in a very short amount of time, at this stage he has looked at each photo 2 times so voting on them or commenting should be rather easy.
I also asked that the current comment be removed as I thought he would have changed it by now if he was going to. If he is still in the process then no big deal, But if for some reason he missed mine I would prefer the comment removed because it is useless as is.
I personally don't care about the Joke never did. Didn't think it was that funny but I give the guy credit for his effort. I do however think it is fair for us to ask that the current comment be removed because according to the echos around here DPC is a learning site and a link to a story about April Fools is not going to teach me or anyone here anything new about taking pictures.
my two cents. |

my two cents are that his link teaches me more about taking pictures than most of the comments I get. |

Well, it's not like you comment very often, and when you do, it's not very entertaining.
There is this one guy though, he gives out great comments and his own special ribbons. His name escapes me. ;-) |

How long do you think it takes to make 501 comments? Not cut and paste, but real comments?
Why not try it at find out? After you've done so, if you still think Peter took too long, please let me know.

Well. He finally voted on my image because his name moved up to the top of the list but he didn't change the comment yet.
As for what Scarbird and Clubjuggle have said to me.
1. Clubjuggle. I have a job, I actually work at my job so I do not have alot free time to waste on DPC. I also am a stay at home dad with my 3 kids. You calling me out on this is a bit rude to say the least. When you have no idea of my reasons for not commenting often.
2. I do not have the skills to critique properly so If I leave a comment it is going to be the basic nice shot or great photo type thing, Scarbrd you think that is boring So I will stop doing that as well. It was actually comments like that which lead me to stop voting on the challenges because if my voting average was below 5 I was a troll if it was above 6 I am giving too many good votes. So I have stopped Now I will stop commenting too.
would either of you like to insult my photos while I am still here so I can stop entering challenges too ?

Brian,
Terry's observation that you don't comment often is not, IMHO, "calling you out." He could well have said that about me, since I'm in about the same boat as you with comments made. It's not a slam, just a fact. However, it *does* put both you and I in the position that we really shouldn't be "commenting" on how long it takes to make 500+ constructive comments, since neither of use have made that many in total. Whether you, (or I) found the joke funny is immaterial. It wasn't offensive, it wasn't malicious, and the end result (500+ comments) will be very beneficial. We *should* be able to see that much. |

I just want to quote a comment used by someone apapretntly very affected in this comment gate situation to help supposedly help another phtographer learn, the comment was "c'mon grow up", not sure exactly how that comment helped but I found it interesting coming from a person that is so sensitive to having a prank comment on a picture, to me this is more of an insult. |

I comment the way I do in fairness to the persons who took the photos. If I like a picture I will say something positive about it, I am not going to go and give the photographer a bunch of advice on how the shot could be better when I still haven't figured out how to make my own shots better, Incase you haven't noticed. I do not have a pile of ribbons here and I have only made the top 20 a couple of times.
I am still trying to learn the do's and donts and rights and wrongs of photography, Not teach them.
I get the impression that some of you think I am bent about the April Fools joke itself. Which is not the case, You can ask Kirbic if I am a serious faced guy and he will be able to tell you that I am the furthest thing from it. I love a good joke and I spend most of my time cracking them. I never take anything too serious until someone takes a personal shot at me. Then I will defend my beliefs But for the most part, I am just a another goof and should never be taken too serious.
I just do not like having a member of SC who I thought were supposed to be neutral around here taking sides and telling me I should try to comment on 500 entries in defense of something I wasn't even complaining about, I just was trying to point out that April Fools day is 4 days past and the Joke is still being played. That is when it is up to SC to moderate the situation and make sure it being fixed.
like I said, I came to DPC and paid my membership to Learn not Teach. DPC is or can be a great place to learn, But I will not learn anything from comments that are nothing but a link to a site about April Fools Day. Then I may as well spend my money on Comic Books and some Fake Vomit.

This reminds me of the "slippy" affair several years ago when I got my knickers in a knot over a game that affected everyone including those of us who chose not to play. It clearly demonstrates the different value this site has for each of us. Though this incident did not bother me to the same extent as the previous event did, it nevertheless tests the patience of those who do not appreciate the joke but are subjected to someone else's view of what is funny. The heated debate which ensues is a predictable aftermath. I'd say the prankster has likely had his PM inbox stuffed with angry messages and that in itself may be sufficient to get the point across without the need of others creating hostile alliances on either side in a public forum.
It looks as if there is alot of mudslinging going on and mob mentality may be the poison that is fueling it. |

Huh?
99% of my comments are "constructive criticism" suggesting both what works for me in the photo and what I think doesn't work. I have yet to have any problem with someone not appeciating my comment. In fact they will often send me a message thanking me for my comment. So I don't really understand you statement.

My skills at critique and my photography have improved by leaps and bounds because of critiquing. Just say what you like and don't like about a photo. You'll be surprised how much you improve.
