I am flying down to Florida from Canada on Saturday morning and I'm at an impass. Should I pack my X-drive with my camera in my carry-on luggage or wrap it up safely and stow it in my checked luggage? I'm afraid it will get seized at security in my carry-on since I can only basically turn it on or off. On the other had, I am afraid that it will get all banged up in mt suitcase. WHAT TO DO?

I would appreciate anyone's help who have already travelled across international borders with an X-drive or other portable file storage device.

Thanks.

my guess is that in inspections, they can only seize something if they have reasonable suspicion of wrongdoing. furthermore, customs, border patrol people aren't just looking to seize certain devices like that. i would say carry it on with you. good luck

I just flew across country when the "terror level" was increased - I carried everything in a carry on as you cannot lock suitcases any more. I had absolutely no trouble...had the Digital wallet, charger, battery charger, cameras, etc..etc. Tripod even. The machines they X-Ray with are far better than they used to be. Good luck.

Carry it on but get to the Airport early to give yourself time to go through security at the gate. You should have no problem :) Have fun in Sunny Florida!

I carried an X-Drive in hand luggage from the UK to the US without any probs.

I think I remember reading in baggage handling that cargo hold baggage uses stronger X-ray machines, which can damage hard drives and the like.

I would hang on to the storage device with your carry-on. I would have a problem with putting it in with the cargo hold baggage because you can lock them anymore.

I try and not put anything valuable or fragile at all in my checked baggage. You can now buy locks that are Transport Authority approved (i.e., they have keys) so you can lock bags again without worrying about them being broken open for inspection.

But that doesn't stop the case going through automated baggage handling, being thrown around and generally beaten up.

where in FL are you going? Im going to atlanta next week, and want to bring a tripod. Should I put it in the checked luggage, or carry-on?

What about memory sticks and cards? Can they be x-rayed?

you will have to put your tripod with your checked luggage for security reasons, so make sure you leave room in your suitcase.
