Is lens flare a bad thing? (I'm assuming that's what that is.) I have never taken an outdoor shot for 30 seconds. Is this normal for these settings? This was resized only, no editing. Thanks for any help. |

I think it comes down to personal taste, on a case-by-case basis. I think it's OK here, it emphasizes the shining moon. Sometimes it might be less desirable, such as if the sun, moon, or whatever light source isn't in your picture, and it doesn't really enhance anything. |

Thanks, I guess I've not noticed it to this degree before. Can it be avoided? Is it something stupid like clean your lens better. At first I thought it was sparks from the fire.
adding, I guess I'm showing my ignorance again. Is my F717 because of its wider lens more apt to have lens flare. Could I still get the moon and stars to shine if I used a polarizer?
So much to learn, so little time.

It happens when you point your camera at a light source. It can be made worse by a dirty lens, but it happens on clean lenses too, at the boundaries between glass and air.
Some lenses are coated to reduce the effect, but it happens when you point your camera at an angle, at a bright light source.
You can always try and use it for effect too
It can also less noticeably reduce contrast in a scene, which is why I have lens hoods for all my lenses that I use when there is any bright light sources in the direction I'm shooting.
