Today while I was out and about shooting with my D200 and 18-200VR a very odd thing happened. After framing a shot I pressed the shutter half-way down and instead of the "snick" sound of VR kicking in and the image stablizing I heard a series of small clicks and the image jumped all over the place. Since then my VR doesn't work. Every time I turn the camera on and every few shots it repeats that sequence.

Once it is done the lens works fine, just without VR. As an aside, I was amazed at how far the VR element can actually move the image. It jumped perhaps a quarter of a frame in several directions as it made the noises. I can only assume the element is moving to full throw in each direction without input from the acellerometers.

I've tried turning the camera off and back on and even removing the battery all to no avail. One other odd thing is that it does it even if I switch the vr off on the lens.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? I'm hoping my lens isn't toast!

Try cleaning the contacts with a pencil eraser. That's the only simple thing that I can think of that could possibly help. Good luck with it.

Bump? Anybody with advice or similar experience?

Were you leaving the VR on even when the camera was off. That may have hirt the motor in the lens. Otherwise call Nikon.

That may only happen if the VR didn't lock the lens element back after use. Like if you hold shutter button half way and turn the camera off. My VR is always on.

Yeah, it is on all the time, but that is by design. When you turn the camera off it also kills power to the lens. In fact, VR turns off immediately after a shot and after a few seconds if you just pre-focus then don't take a shot. As soon as you hit the shutter you hear a little "snick" noise that is VR kicking in. No luck on fixing it yet. As soon as I get back in town I will check with a repair shop. :-(

Edited for spelling.

If you bought this lens new and it is a US lens, the warranty is
usually 5 years if you registered your product. Good luck.

Not sure if this is the case with every 18-200 But the VR on mine doesn't make any noise at all. Is it supposed to make noise? I know mine works because I can see the image kind of wiggle and then freeze.

I'm not sure if it is supposed to or not but both mine and a friend of mine's have the exact same noise. Don't get me wrong, it is pretty quiet but still clearly audible. for the longest time I thought I was hearing the focus mechanism until I switched to manual focus and still heard it. Turning off VR made the noise quit.

So even in a quiet environment you don't hard any noise from yours?
