Whenever I take my camera out in public I just get these mental blanks, I'm getting better, I'm not the fumbling mess I used to be, but I still make basic errors.
Yesterday I decided to shoot at the St Patrick's day parade. While waiting for it to start I was checking the camera settings making sure I didn't repeat any of my previous mistakes (wrong ISO etc.) - Everything looked fine.
So the parade starts, and I get a good position at the front, and start shooting with no problems. Until I decided to pop the on-camera flash for some weak (-2.0) fill to lift shadows a bit. But now, from the pre-focus to the shutter release was taking half a second, and with that lag I was missing shots. When I turned off the flash everything was fine again (no lag)
This morning I figured out what was happening. Can anyone guess what idiotic mistake I made?

Flash recycle time? Or night portrait mode?

Nope. Although flash recycle time was the first thing that I thought of, it wasn't that. It was even more stupid... :) |

Yes! Got it! - When I was looking through the settings beforehand I decided to turn on red-eye reduction for some reason... big DOH! today when I realised what I'd done.
Moral of the story; don't mess with the settings 10 minutes before you start shooting.... :) |

I can totally empathize...if I had a dollar for every time I've been stumped by my own mistakes I'd have a lot more lenses than I do at the moment. :)

I never screw up, I'm perfect. Sometimes my camera goofs up though.
