Any suggestions on which Lens is better for portraits and fashion (not runway), I have been getting mixed reviews of the Nikon 50mm f/1.4D and 50mm f/1.8D, they are both great lenses and the price difference is $200.00 from one to another, I like to get one but which one is better.
Thanks
Sunny

| I have the 50mm 1.8 and I love it! It has been the best lens for me. I cant speak to the 1.4, I figured I would go with the cheaper lens first! |

I love my 50mm 1.8 as well. I can't speak to the 1.4 either, but IMHO it's not worth the extra 200USD for what you are doing. Save that 200USD and put it to something else.

| I think this is one of those where either on will be fine. The 1.4 is metal which is a bit heavier I believe and a bit studier - but I believe htere isn't much difference in image quality. I think 1.4 is "better" but only in build and the obvious very slight improvement in speed. |

My understanding is, like metatate said, the 1.4 is built better, and is sharper wide open. But at more normal aperture settings, the 1.8 has a very slight advantage in sharpness.
Personally, I don't care for the razor thin DOF look, and don't do enough low light shooting to justify the cost of the 1.4, but YMMV.

| Same as above, the 50mm f/1.8 is great! and rather inexpensive... |

I'm soon going to be picking up 50mm 1.8. You can't possibly go wrong at $125 for a brand new lens, and I'm tired of trying to get my 3.5-6.0 28-300 to take the fast shots I need to get.
I realize I'll have to get used to the "Human Zoom" thing, but hey.....I'm overweight and I need the exercise! LOL!!! |
