Say you had a birthday coming up and your parents asked you what you wanted, what type of lens would you get?
I have a rebel: and I dont want a macro that much I do know. |

According what you need and what you wanna shoot. The three that get the most use in my bag:
Canon 85mm f/1.8 - Good for portraits - $300
Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 - Good to replace that kit lens and make a walk arounf lens - $300
Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 - Good for landscapes - $600

| I really like the Canon 50mm 1:1/8. It works pretty well for me, but I mainly do portraits and some macro. |

either the tamron 17-50 f2.8 or the Canon 17-40 F4 L. The Canon is sharper across the frame and better contrast/colour, but it's slower. It also stays damn sharp until about F16 whereas the Tamron starts to suffer after F11.
The tamron is cheaper, more versatile, but not great. The canon is great at what it does, but it doesn't do much. |

This lens is great and not to hard on the bank either. 300 with a 10 dollar mail in rebate. |

yeah btu if i had the choice between the two i'd take the canon for the increased sharpness and it's great in the studio where i'm shooting at around F8 anyways.
Also, when i come to upgrade it it holds it's money a lot better than the Tamron will. |

i'd get the 135mm f2 ... set it at f2 and break the knob off
complete isolation equals good photography
:)

I absolutely LOVE my 17-40 F4L and the 10-22, wouldn't trade either for anything, esp as far as wide lenses go on a crop sensor body.
