This is definitely my favorite site on the internet. Maybe cause I'm addicted, but I think its more the fact that this community is amazing and never ceases to amaze me. Sure, not all of us always get along or agree, but most of us are polite about it, and whenever there is something bad that happens to someone, no doubt there will be tons of people, just itching to help out.

I really love this community and have a great time in it.

Thanks all.

Ditto, and then paid for someone else to join :)

I've made some very close friends that began as online contacts and have been in some rather tight-knit communities, but have NEVER seen the kind of selfless giving and caring that I see here.

Awwww, Dang, Art roflmao why didn't you say something. I snapped it up to send to that kid in Nigeria who really, really needed it!

in other news, this community is unique and I'm delighted to have stumbled upon it early in my digital camera career. I've hung around since 2003.

It's taught me how to use my camera, how to use Photoshop, and how to enjoy friendship on the internet. I've met people in my own backyard that I'd never have had the chance to meet, and I wouldn't pass that up for anything. I've met, on-line, people around the world that are just plain special. The OP is one of them.

On the whole, DPC land is clean and well-mannered, and even our characters are generally, well, sweet.

Yep, Drew and Langdon started a very good thing, and are keeping it a very good thing with the help of the SC and the community.

Heck, I live right down the road from him. We met for breakfast one day. I offered to mentor him and he declined. He said he's happy with things the way they are. I reported on all this, actually, way back when... So in a sense your wish was granted but the gift was refused :-)

Ah, thanks. It seems I missed your report way back when. And you would have been the perfect tutor for him. ;-)

I don't think I'd have received a camera from most other sites on the internet!!
I was so thankful when that happened and I will always be thankful.
Not just that, but seeing other people helped, and the way that people come together in times of crisis, really warms my heart.

I have personally taken more than I can give with DPC.

I've seen and sought advice needed and given, moms needing to see daughters and visa versa and recieving, amateurs turning into professionals, lost cameras replaced into the right hands, and gray days turned into blue... because of DPC.

This is the most unique community on the internet that I have ever seen. I've grown since becoming a member and I've seen others grow as well.

Is DPC THAT unique of a community?

It's not unique but community's like it are few and far between.

I'm on a golf message board where the community is just as strong. Where ever you are travelling there will probably be a GTG with members from the group. Most of the online friendships have become friendships IRL.

DPC seems to have that too.

I'm on a couple of Nissan/Infiniti automotive forums that have a sense of community just as strong as this one. We get together a couple times a year for sizable car meets/shows, help each other do mechanical work, go on cruises and have dinner, etc. I've gone to other cities and met some of the people that way, too. And if I wanted to buy a car in another state, I know I could find someone on there that would go and check it out in person for me before I decided to buy it. Also, a couple of times when our members had bad wrecks we pulled together some donations via PayPal for them.

A lot of it depends on your history and popularity on a site/forum, though. I've been on those since the beginning, and I'm a moderator there, so there are guys on those forums that would drive 100 miles and bail me out of jail if I needed it, but I'm pretty certain no one here would do that for me because I'm not a significant enough member yet. :)

Well, there's two guys who write the comic and run the site. They donate toys to children's hospitals. It's grown a lot from when they started it. There's more detail if you are interested here.

niffty. if you're active over there, could you ask them to get the hospital i work for added to their list? [link] you know... help a dpc brother out.

as for this feeling of community, i am a part of an email list that started out of a passion for a particular musical artist that's become something much more. it has members all over the states and i've had the pleasure of meeting up with several of them over the years... it's a niffty thing.

I quite enjoy the US politics side of DPC, the Clinton - Obama battle is keeping my attention, which is quite an acheivement. Also, the outcome is going to be unique in American history, either a woman President or a black President. I look forward to seeing the final results.

I consider DPC my home on the internet. I was missing for awhile, but checking in pretty often without posting or submitting. I got torn away by life. I felt something important was missing for that time period, and I started to become very depressed and discontent with life in general... then one day, about a month ago, I woke up and said to myself, I NEED to get back involved with DPC. I started posting, voting, brainstorming ideas, thinking about photography more, learning more photoshop techniques, and talking to old friends here. I feel like I am getting better - a little happier every day that I'm here, involved. It's truly a family of not only great photographers, but great individuals who inspire me in so many ways!

Or another old, white male president. Don't forget the power of the status quo. Francis Rossi for president!

At least he'd be the oldest-ever white male president ...

I'd suggest that, but I don't expect Gordon Brown to allow any elections in the (near) future.

A unique outcome would be a honest, peaceful, intelligent and charismatic leader that flexed his/her own moral muscle on addressing domestic issues rather than international morality crusading. Until that day I'll be spending my time and effort on more important matters, like photography :)

Hmmm... seems like some folks driving this thread took a wrong turn in Albuquerque. Plenty of political threads around (and I enjoy them as much as I hate them). Other than the general subject of political discourse that occurs on the site, specific politics is outside the scope of this thread.

Thank you for your cooperation. ...and your village thanks you as well. :)

I don't think DPC is THAT unique. It is great though :)

I think the better communities develop online when there's a specific hobby that unites people.

I've also been involved in a cat forum where people have banded together and paid vet bills for sick cats or set up big transport chains to get a cat needing a home to a waiting adopter in addition to supporting each other on non-cat related things.

I had my suspicions there were plenty of other sites around with similar dynamics. All the relevant posts here are appreciated and I find them interesting. I am a closet sociology buff. ;-)

Would you settle for World Peace? LOL - I'm just kidding Whiterook - ya know I love ya!

When I get into the top twenty their will be world peace in the universe !

People here have been known to raise money for good causes, retouch photos for Katrina victims, organize flowers for a member's loss, give equipment away to young talent, offer surprise birthday wishes, program web sites, author tutorials, and donate memberships to complete strangers. We're constantly on the lookout for theft of another member's work, warning of scams and alerting each other to great deals. Heck, a handful of fools even volunteer to take abuse from the other members on a regular basis. It's the only site I've ever paid money to join. Yeah, I'd call that pretty unique. ;-)

It is a great site and I have seen a lot of very compassionate moments from the people here - but I also have to say it is not the only site that I belong to that has moments like those.

I also belong to a cornsnake forum where we have GTG's on a whim all across the country. Just this past week I managed to meet people in both California and Arizona while on my vacation.

Members on that site have also spent their own time and money to encourage, help, stand by friends, etc etc etc...much the same way people here do.

I do believe there are other online communities out there with the same moral values and friendships that form here at DPC - just different interests.

Well, who would have thought - a cornsnake forum! Wonders never cease.
