I haven't been really happy with any of my recent photos. Last week I went to the city and tried to capture some street shots. I guess I just want to get any suggestions on what I can improve on... Thanks.

Why are you unhappy with your photos ?

What do you feel is lacking or missing ?

Why don't they have what is missing ?

What could you do to improve on that ?

What's stopping you ?

I can tell you what I don't like, but, as Gordon says, the most important answers come from you.

I don't know exactly. I just feel like they are lacking. I see images on deviantart and on here and I feel like none of mine can even come close to compare to what other people take. I'm not sure what it is that they are missing, and I'm not sure how to fix it...

A place to start might be collecting/ saving/ bookmarking those images and taking a long hard look at them and trying to work out what it is about them that you like. maybe write it down. Take as long as you can, write in as much detail as you can. Describe what you like about them, how they make you feel, what stands out or captures your attention about the emotion, the composition, the lighting, the use of colour, line, texture, shape. Consider the perspective, maybe think about what sort of lens is used, how connected the subject is or isn't to the camera, what mood you feel, is it tidy or cluttered, sharp or blurred, emotive or sterile. Write down any words that come into your head when you study these images that you like. You don't need to share this with anyone, so just write it all down. For each one really try to explore why it works for you.

Maybe you'll find a common theme. Maybe you'll find several new avenues to improve on or explore. But it might take a bit of thought and effort - the key is it'll be what you like or are interested in, not some random person saying 'I don't like yellow taxis in a desaturated B&W image' or 'the perspective distortion is distracting' or plenty of other equally valid/ invalid/ useless and impersonal comments that you might get.

Maybe try and take photos of stuff to get a message across. Instead of just looking at something cool, try and get your photo to say something about why you think something is cool or interesting. For instance, if your house has shutters on it that you think would make a good picture, think of why they would be a good picture; is it because of the contrast between the shutter's colors and the house's? Or are they cool because of the weathered look? That will help you decide what to include in your shot.

If not, then buy a bunch of flowers and don't stop taking pictures until you're happy. That's what someone told me to do, hahah.

And about the picture, try cropping some of the street out. It just provides unnecessary negative space. I think I would like it a lot more if the shot was tighter.
