I have no idea what to get. All she wants is something small and that will take pictures well (And by well, I mean the size and type you email to friends and family) I don't think functions of any kind are necessary. She just wants to have something slightly fashionable and compact.
I was looking at the CASIO EX-S10
Any opinions?

She might like the Nikon Coolpix line. They are very affordable and are designed for ease of use. Not a lot of manual controls, and a good user interface. The L11 ought to be available on clearance right about now.
This was shot with a Coolpix L6, which is nearly identical to the L11.

I have used this camera at work a few times and it works great. Probably a perfect one for her.

If I were looking for myself, I would put a whole lot of research into it to find the absolute best (Functions and what not included). My wife needs fashionable *rolls eyes*...I'm gonna see if she would go for a Nikon series.

Why set yourself up for failure? If functions and image quality are not that important, just let her pick the one she considers "fashionable" and get it. |

Canon PowerShot series... any of the IS models. They're small, easy to use and kinda hard to miss on image quality.

This one is very compact and stylish: Nikon S51 A close friend of mine (who places high value on style) recently bought one and has been very happy with it, especially IQ.
ETA: You can get it in several different colors, but you need to look around at different chains. There is dark blue, black, red, and pink in addition to this chocolate color.

There are *so* many cams to choose from, and unfortunately as photographers we tend to focus on attributes that may not be important to the casual snap-shooter. Do take her shopping and get an idea what she considers stylish. Let her play with several cams and see how she responds to the various user interfaces.
One thing to consider: she's *not* going to want to do any post-processing, so the camera's ability to deliver print-ready shots is going to be key. You might want to consider the Kodak cameras. They have a tremendous track record of appeal to those looking for an easy-to-understand cam that delivers print-ready pics. Not always the best in feature set or technical image quality, but those are not the highest priorities here. |

Small and simple. Canon SD series (Digital Elpf)
The latest ones are 10 & 12 MP with IS but if you get the one that is 6 or 8 MP with IS you will save a bunch of money.
They are great for a purse and pretty fasionable. |

| Just to throw this out -- a few weeks ago, someone sent me an article about how more megapixels on smaller sensors are not necessary a good thing. It (the article) was saying that 4 or 5 mp was essentially all you would need on a point and shoot. Anything more was overkill. |

Look at my little Contax 3.2 MP titanium case REAL Carl Zeiss lens totally cool hard to find but I have seen them on ebay NEW for very little money, comes in a leather case and has that CONTAX quality, easy to use too and fits right into your handbag..... err, I've heard.

Nikon Coolpix L10: the colour is excellent, it is a simple but rather intelligently put together little cheap-and-comes-in-pink-camera.
AND Karmat is definitely right on the megapixels. Also important for the SD card: if you use the Multiple shot, which is Very Useful for these small cams without image stabilization, the card fills up pretty fast, so you don't need extra pixels.
AA batteries (get rechargables), a 2 Mg SD card and you're away.
Did I emphasize cheap? That is a great virtue. When Mrs. j decides she wants more of a real camera you won't have lost much at all. |

I couldn't agree more. More pixels, more noise, more data to deal with and processing to do to reduce size for sharing. |

A friend of mine had a new Nikon Coolpix yesterday, a P & S. The neat thing it had was that it had a large LCD and no lens on the front. I can't remember which model it was, but it was sleek and compact. I believe it was the S51c model.

Thanks for all the input.
It's kind of a present (A Japanese version of Valentines Day where the men give women presents). She showed an interest in the Casio. The only thing I know for sure is that she is not into pink...I like pink, she doesn't. Anyways, I'll be going back to the store to do more research.
