So far everyone giving ideas about "Challenge Subjects" but I have an idea. Why don't we have a challenge that photos taken only fixed lenses?
I realize that many people won't like the idea since they may not have any fixed lens at all but idea here to bring up the suggestion, and take it from there. Other could be challenge that photos taken with filters (color) only ;) |

I thought this would be a good augmentation for the free studies. This month a fixed filter. Next month a square crop. the following month Portrait layout...etc.etc. Not telling the subject or technicals but something to make them more interesting.

What do you mean by "fixed lenses"? If you mean "prime" (non-zoom) lenses, then none of the P&S people can enter. If you mean "non-interchangeable" lenses, then none of the dSLR people can enter...

so then they can make two challenges at the same time. "fixed" and "non interchangeable"...i think its a good idea. would be nice to see what people come up with, with the "lens", as the only requirement.

I guess I'm struggling to see how this really differs from 'free study'. You get to pick a lens and go take a picture with it ?
Challenge yourself to use the same one prime lens for a month or a year, that might be fun and instructive.

Well, IF you do that then the one challenge is limited to dSLR owners who also own prime lenses, and the other is limited to point-and-shoot owners. I don't see the sense in that, myself; why not CALL them what they are: "dSLR Challenge" and "P&S Challenge"?
I suspect OP has something else in mind and I am not getting it, dense as I be...

if the OP has something else in mind then you can count me as dense too. If nothing else maybe you should say "ok the challenge is, you must take a picture with your focal distance ONLY between 20-40mm (or something that would incorporate more cameras). Anything outside that distance is grounds for DQ. |

20-40mm with what reference? How do you convert the P & S 7-28mm lens to this reference? |

I think it's fairly obvious that the suggestion is to restrict entries to those taken with prime lenses on DSLRs. Unless it's balanced out by a complementary exclusive challenge, it's not a good idea in that it rules out P&S users, and DSLR users who don't own primes. As well, it's very close to a free study. |

This is a great idea! I did this with my 50mm 1.4 for a month (a year seems a bit much). I learned alot! I'm doing the same with my 17-55 now....

Some seem to manage it for a lifetime.

Yes, it's prime or fixed lens I think... but yes, that's the idea.
If that would be a problem then lets try "color filter" challenge... or "macro lens" only challenge... "using built in flash photos only" challenge :P something with camera and camera equipment/parts related :)

Every time you do that, you potentially limit entrants to those who own the equipment you restrict the challenge to. I couldn't enter a "colour filter" challenge for example, because I don't have any. |

Restricted entry challenges like these are fine as long as they are extras and don't replace a challenge that is open to everyone. |

I had an idea awhile back for a fixed aperture of f/8 challenge. Thought it might be interesting to see what we get from wide angle to telephoto zooms in terms of sharpness and depth of field. Would be like a Free Study though. Might be a nice Thursday challenge like cpanaioti suggests.

I really like that idea - forcing us to use a fixed aperture would really teach those of us still learning something thoroughly useful. |

Like the idea of fixed aperture. f/8 is my smallest, not my sweetest though. And many lesser P & S's give no control over aperture. Sigh. However this sort of thing might make an excellent side challenge; side challenges IMO offer way better opportunities to hone in on some camera/photo aspect. I say "offer," because they tend to get a wee bit out of "control" what with the enthusiasm and all. Toying with the idea of suggesting a P & S side challenge designed to tease earth shattering results out of the least of these little suckers. |
