Never thought of using it with different colors, usually I just use the black and white gradient map with a Selective color adjustment underneath it. Even for Basic editing challenges. May have to change my ways....

OK, we seem to have agreed that the Gradient Map adjustment layer is legal in Basic editing, subject to the usual restrictions on the (non-)use of selections/masks and blending modes.

Agreed, and my apologies for adding to the confusion, as I had mis-remembered what Gradient Map did. I finally got Photoshop installed on my Linux installation and had a chance to refresh my memory and agree with the SC consensus that it should be legal.
