Live view is fun.

Coming from the rebel line, you'll love the wheel on the back (or hate it).

Welcome to the team. Great camera, and the burst really makes a difference.

I found this video from canon useful.

The ONLY thing I'm REALLY hating is that my 420EX Flash, which worked fine with the 350D, now seems not to work with the 40D. Thread here.

Edit: Another trick is to set bracketing and then the 2-second delay and the camera will take all 3 shots by itself, which is really helpful for some of the stuff I do.

I've tried Live View a couple of times, but AutoFocus seems to turn off when live view is on. What silly thing have I done to cause that?

The "Highlight Priority" function is cool. I set it to one of the Custom slots on my dial.

AF works differently in Live View. You have to use the AF-ON button. The shutter button will not trigger AF.

Great idea to set the Highlight Tone Priority on one of the custom selections on the dial.

I suggest you read the manual, that should explain a good number of questions you may have.

Too bad the posted videos skip horribly making it impossible to listen to.

That was my experience too. I thought it was just me ;-)

Huh?

It is possible to Auto Focus while using Live view. Just press the AF-On button on the back of the camera and the mirrow will drop back down and the camera will focus. When you release the button the mirror flips back up and Live View resumes. While this works great, I have found that the true benefit of Live View is in manual focusing, especially for Macro and things of that nature. I also like it for Landscape shots as well because it allows me to see everything. The one drawback I have found about the Live View is that the camera will not fire the flash when it is on. Oh well.

And another quick tip.
Get an extra battery if you use Live View lots as it eats battery life for lunch!
:) Great feature though!

Oops. Completely mis-read the thread. Thanks for the tip.

Flash does work with live view. If you're using a non-Canon flash you need to disable the silent mode option in the menu. Check the manual.

Kev

I upgraded from the 350D to 40D, a world of difference. Don't get me wrong the 350D is a great camera and I still have mine. It has less than 9000 shutter counts so it's still a baby. But when I received the 40D it felt like a Cadillac. The best feature [IMO] is the "Live View". It alone will help you learn how to manual focus. In the past I mostly used the Av mode and some time the Tv move but with the "live View" feature it has helped me dial-in my manual focus skills.

Congratulation on your new camera.
Scott

Thanks for the reply.
I hoping the 40d and the L lens will inspire me to shoot more.
Went out tonight but nothing to write home about, but may still stick one in a challenge just for the update button.
Still learning the camera, but SOOOO impressed so far. The 6.5 frames per sec is amazing...

Enjoy the new hardware, Kev. You'll definitely like it.

Wow, there are now 420 of us 40D owners here at DPC! :-)

Some know a good thing when they see it and others are a little slower on the uptake! :P
(And some have to budget for it which is understandable. :D )
UPDATE: 430
