I followed that link to the CNN page, which showed the news about Eliot Spitzer in the "Breaking News" box. Unbelievable. I so wanted him to be New York State's Governor (that's where I'm from before I came here). Anyway . . .

/edited to add link/

Does that mean that I don't have to buy my prescription drugs anymore, I can just drink water from the tap? (sorry, I know it is not a joking matter for some, I could not resist..)

I seriously frown on jokes in bad taste. I also noticed "...heightening worries among scientists of long-term consequences to human health." I thought perhaps that was slightly inaccurate. Should have said something like 'health of the human population of the USA', which the rest of us gave up on some time ago...

I have a great entry in peek-a-boo. Subtle, humourous, powerful, striking, original, beautiful, 4.5.

Last month Jeffrey kindly let everyone know I had won the TrustedReviews.com photo competition. This month, I'm thrilled to let everyone know that my "bananas" shot made it into the top shots (bottom of this page), but, much more importantly, our own Jeanne ( JerseyGenie) has also made the top shots with her "pencils" entry, Take Out #2.

But more more importantly, Jeffrey ( levyj413) is this month's winner for his "glasses" shot!! Given that he introduced me to the competition (which has real-world prizes) through a post here in the TS thread, I'm glad he got the win this month.

Congratulations, Jeffrey!

Now, who's next? This month's competition is "Reflection." Hmmm, would anyone around here have any reflection shots laying around . . . ?

Way to go, folks!! Very glad to see Team Suck so well represented and with such excellent results! And congrats on the top prize, Jeffrey! I'd enter my reflections, but I have the sneaking suspicion Jeffrey may enter his... and that'll have the fat lady at least warming up if not belting out the final number. :-)

p.s. Any tips on how you get more info on the contest, how to enter, and whether or not there are rules for processing? I can't seem to find anything anywhere.

It's not very intuitive there, is it.

I *think* that This link is where you need to go though.

Yep, Lea's right; they always split the announcement of a new theme; first page is theme title (I linked that from the "reflections" link above); go to the bottom of the page and click on page 2 (the link in Lea's post).

It's a good competition, though, and I like the guy who runs it (okay, so he's picked me to appear in the top shots twice and once more as winner, so I guess I'm allowed to like him), so get in there, everybody!

Duh. I looked everywhere and apparently missed the obvious. Thanks!

Okay, I need some Team Suck inspiration (pretty please). One of my local arts organizations is holding a photo competition with the theme of:

Little Things

That's all they say (which I like), but what popped into my head immediately was "macro". And now that's all that's in my head (those of you who have chatted with me will know that my mind has a limited capacity; usually it's "beer" "beer" "beer" but tonight it's "macro" "macro" "macro").

Anyone who would care to give me stream of conscience thoughts on "Little Things", it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Bruce

Been there done that, esp in Led Zep...so far as I am concerned the more I like a shot, the less the dpc vox populi (TSers not included obviously) will...so from now on I will make it a policy to shoot and enter only pics that I like and ideally had fun shooting. nyah! :-)

BruceRoger,

"Little" is a comparison word, so think of pictures of things much smaller than a big thing, but have the attention drawn to the little, not the big. You can do this by cropping out part of the big thing.

Thanks! That shot keeps winning for me (sorry, Don). :)

Rob, I knew you were playing, but it was a nice surprise to see Jeanne there, and how great it was to have three of us as finalists!

The funny thing is I'm not sure I can even use the 50 pound gift certificate to photobox.com.

It's a monthly contest, and they post the theme near the beginning of the month. Just check the Digital Cameras page and look for the little photo of two people shooting each other:

There's very little in the way of rules. I emailed the guy to ask, and was told the photos can be taken at any time. As for editing:
"Compositing and any other editing is fine as long as all the photos you use are your
own. However just remember that this is a photography competition, not a photo-editing competition, and the winning entries will be judged on that basis."

And yeah, Deb, I entered one of my four reflections shots from last month. I had a tough time choosing, actually. But I'm done with reflections like that for a while (whistles innocently about his silverware entry). Anyway, since he knows who submitted, if he's smart, he'll spread the winners around.

I'm also delighted to announce another photo contest that I'd love to see TSers enter. I happen to be organizing it. :) I work for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and we'd love to see shots in three categories:
- Protecting the environment
- Enjoying the environment
- Nature and wildlife

We're running the contest on flickr.com, but you can also email me entries if you don't want to create an account there. Here are the details on EPA's site.

Drugs in the water is a serious issue. We've been doing some work on it, and so have other agencies. And Raish, I'd be stunned if this was only a problem in the US. After all, everyone lives downstream. Unless you have some pristine source of drinking water where no one has ever taken medicines, that is.

U.S. Office of National Drug Control Policy info on proper disposal of prescription drugs

Now, before this turns into a political debate, let me say that federal employees don't always agree with what their leadership is doing, and it's possible for an agency to do the wrong things in some cases but still do good work elsewhere.

Flame on if you like; just wanted to say that up front. :)

Amen. I know a dedicated Liberal who works for the EPA. I'd tell you his name but I don't want him to go missing... :O

Rob, how about little things , like little things make a difference. Something like a boy scout helping a older person across the road, or a big mean looking biker holding the door for someone with a armful of groceries, or possibility someone giving a homeless person a blanket.

The happy, satisfied customer just might be generating me some business. As of now though I will refuse to shoot any grumpy people... ROFL!

So I'm in for Blurry Mess. Will say in the 4's. It will be said by the masses not messy enough or blurry enough. Can't win for losing :)

Rob, 'Little things' makes me think of small gifts or acts of kindness. Like getting a flower, giving someone the bigger piece of cake, sharing a sandwich, giving a card, a well timed pat on the shoulder or a hug, holding onto a cinema ticket for sentimental reasons, a brightly coloured umbrella on a gray day, that sorta thing.

Story from a while back (and seriously, this pretty much made my month at the time...). Everyone in Britain is familiar with the concept of chuggers, you get them in every town. I was working as one a couple of years back (a summer job before going off to Thailand), and it's the most intense and psychologically straining job I've ever done. You're working 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, and traveling the 7th day, and you have to be happy, chirpy, bouncy, loud and genuine sounding the entire time to get any sign-ups at all. While people avoid you, ignore you, or swear at you most of the time. When a day is going well, you're on a high and get loads of sign-ups, because everyone responds to the energy. But if it's a rubbish day, you sink lower and lower (it's traditional for most people to end up in tears by the end of their first week, it's just that kind of job). Anyway. It was a horrible, gray, rainy day, in a relatively poor place near Glasgow, it was about 5pm and I'd hardly gotten any sign-ups all day. And I stopped a lady walking along with a ladybird umbrella. Of course starting the conversation with: *bounce* *wave* "Hello lady! I love your umbrella!". Anyway, had a chat with her, she didn't sign up, but she was very sweet. She went on her way, I carried on working. But about 20 mins later she came back with a present - she bought me an umbrella too :D A teddybear one (she said there were no ladybirds left in the shop). She gave it to me and quickly disappeared again, giving me just enough time for a stunned "Thank you", leaving me to dance on the street in the rain with my new shiny umbrella :D
In the life of one very soaked, tired chugger, you have no idea how much difference this made. It's been 3 years, and thinking back through it still made me smile :)

Jelena, what a wonderful story! It's great when stuff like that happens! Do you still have the brolly (are they still called brollies?)

Yup, we call 'em brollies in the UK :)
I left it with another team of fundraisers before I left work. It seemed kind of at home there really :)
