I was walking through a mall a couple of days ago and couldn't escape the life size ads hanging in the windows. I must have circled back three time just to enjoy the quality of the work and then wonder how it was lit.
The ads can be found here, if you are interested.
These are straight forward portrait style images, feature gap cloths of course, shot against a seamless gray background. The catch light in the model's eyes shows a standard umbrella as a main light. The shadows clearly have some fill, but there is no obvious second light for fill. The backgrounds have a wonderful fall off from right to left with no shadows. This all appears simple, but the result was something that I found very appealing. I also know that getting such results with a basic setup is not easy. The balance and execution just blows me away.
Any thoughts on the technique used for fill and background light? Is there hair, rim or kicker lights or is it just the main?
Dave

While I'm obviously no expert ... these seem more or less straight forward to me (straight forward meaning set up exactly as you describe). The one thing that does stand out to me is the obvious shiny skin on every model, clearly done on purpose, but usually a no-no, right?
Also, most likely medium format film and then drum scanned to enormous file size. Perhaps it's the display (so big) that is standing out to you rather than the images themselves. I think they're good, but having not seen them the way you have ... I don't think they're all that special.
but what do i know?

from most of the catch lights there does appear to be some secondary source to the camera left, too. Though it is pretty small.

I was found of their red campaign as well, which was shot by Annie Leibovitz and also seemed rather minimalistic with simply lighting and gray seamless backgrounds. I cannot explain exactly why I like them other than to say that they seem personal and human with a focus on letting the subject show through.
My wife didn't think they were so special either :-)

i saw the exact same gap ads while walking through the mall this past weekend and i agree, i find them quite stunning, maybe because of the simplicity and great use of colour?
i'd love to figure out how these were done |
