DP Challenge is my last resort. I haven't been able to get my question answered by anyone. Here's what happens...I'll give an example. Let's say I create a new file in Photoshop. And then I create a circle, using the basic circle tool. I then rasterize the circle. Then I use the magic wand to select the newly circle. I then delete the "contents" of the circle. So now I'm left with only the dashed outline of the circle (magic wand). I then create a gradient inside the dashed area of the circle. Here's where the problem is. As soon as I do a ctrl-d to get rid of the magic wand outline, so I can see the new circle gradient, I notice that the edges of the gradient are jagged/pixelated. I've included a link to an example of what I'm talking about:

//dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=648266

You'll notice that on the white to red gradient, the edges are pixelated. When I created the original circle (before rasterizing it and highlighting it with the magic wand) it had smooth edges. But once I did the gradient the edges became pixelated! I upgraded to CS3 about a year ago...and I never remember that happening in CS2.

Hopefully that made sense. If ANYONE can help me with this problem, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Russell

I tried changing the DPI to both 180 and also 300. That didn't do anything. I also unchecked the anti-aliasing box when the magic wand is checked. That didn't do anything either. This is driving me crazy. It didn't used to do this. I've also messed with the tolerance...going from 0 to 250. No change.

Try refining the edge.

What size is your canvas?

well if start with a dpi of 180 and then went to 300 it wouldnt change anything, once you start at a low quality you cant recreate high resoution without adding information (aka redoing it). try startign witha resoltuion of 300dpi

What about adding a slight feather to soft the edge Russell?

I think Refine Edges is only avaiable in CS3. If you don't have access to that I would just suggest creating a gradient layer style on the circle layer rather than using the magic wand which never produces a very clean selection hence why you get that aliasing that is going on when you fill the selection with a gradient. Instead of deleting the contents just double click on the circle layer so you get into the layer styles and choose a gradient overlay from there.

Or just use the eliptical selection tool and after you have your circle outline choose the gradient tool and fill it with a gradient. That produces a smoother edge than working with a selection created from the wand tool.

If you are using a small canvas size with less pixels than a large canvas...then of course it will pixelise. All images do...but the more the pixels in the canvas, the less noticeable it is until you zoom in.

of course you could feather your selection, that will give the appearance of a smoother edge.

You also may get better results if you save for web in photoshop and save that button as a gif

the SAME thing keeps happening to me, it's very frustrating[I never had this problem in CS2 either.]

I've been noticing it when I am working with type and smart objects--once these are rasterized the magic wand produces a pixelated edge. The only solution I could come up with is to keep a vector layer and use that to make your selections.

Sounds like you're looking for that crisp edge..DON'T feather it!

just to clarify..when i say use a vector layer, make it in illustrator first and copy/paste.
Or in your case, load the selection [BEFORE rasterizing], create a new layer to add color etc.

Or better yet, "I like what you have said, See."

Edit to add: Say that out loud and just try to not sound like a mobster.
