If your image has a perfectly black background, is it legal under the Advanced (Jan 14th) rules to increase the canvas with black to increase negative space? Could it be considered a border (a large one), though not distinct and clearly recognizable? Or would it be considered a new image area?
Really don't want to try and reshoot to get the extra negative space the image is needing. |

I think you would be treading on dangerous ground Spicoli. ;) Something about changing the viewers perception... major element. Maybe the SC will chime in.

I think its not legal. I remember a photo got Dq'ed for something similar, shooting an object in white snow and adding a big "white border" and it was decided it was adding image area and DQ'ed. The white border could not be differentiated from the image and that is apparently a no no. |

I think there are a couple of lines in the rules that may apply to this-
You May
-add a border to the outside edge of your entry. Your border must be distinct and clearly recognizable as a border
You May NOt
-use ANY editing technique to create new image area, objects or features (such as lens flare or motion) that didn’t already exist in your original capture(s).
(bold emphasis added by me)
Sounds like to me, especially the create new image area, that seems to be what you are asking if you can do? Create new/more negative space.

I think this is the image jdannels is refering to, yet its DQ was for "using ... editing tools to duplicate, create, or move major elements ..."

In this case a large amount of negative space qualified as a major element... ???? I think. Maybe they could have used both rules to DQ but chose the major elements one. dunno. |

I think they considered the tombstone moved in relation to its original position in the frame |

Hi Limbo,
The others are right - you cannot increase the canvas size to create new image area. Sorry! |

Thought so but had to check. Always best to check before submission.
Thanks for the quick responses everyone. |
