excel created webpage:

//www.shutupmilo.com/scores.htm

excel spreadsheet:

//www.shutupmilo.com/score.xls

My thinking is that every month, on a one month delay to account for DQ's, someone could input the top 10 finishers of each challenge (I did the month of January in less than half an hour). The spreadsheet calculates the score based on the placing (copy the formula cell down).

Every time more info is added, a new pivot table has to be created, which is as simple as highlighting names, placing, and score in the spreadsheet and choosing "create pivot table". Then drag names to the left column, place in the middle, and score on top (you'll know what I mean when you see the pivot table creation wizard).

Anyway, thought I'd share. I'm not volunteering to do this because of the riot that will ensue if I decide I don't want to do it anymore :)

Lemme save ya the trouble, at least for my line: my point total will be 8 for 2008. :)

Milo, I didn't see a sign up list for this year, but can I join in? I don't think I can do much, since I mainly will enter free studies at this point (and I may not make all of those), but what the heck--I'm off to a good start anyway. ;)

There's no sign up ... there's not even someone to run it :) You "join" by coming in 10th or better.

It's my plan to track these numbers, but I'm not volunteering to be that guy for the whole site ... that's why I've offered up the spreadsheet. Once something becomes an obligation for me, all the fun gets sucked out of it. Plus, there must be someone better at excel than myself. I don't know how to do anything besides what you see. And there's missing info which everyone's going to want (rank, previous rank, ribbon count, etc.)

Last, I think my website would crash if I tried to host it.

So let's call this a call for a stat guy ... any takers?

Keep in mind that DrAchoo already does this for top 5 finishers, so even if this particular idea dies ... I'm pretty sure he'll still follow thru with his stats.

and he's welcome to tweak the spreadsheet for his own use ... I've pm'd him already

I've got a while then. The highest placement I've ever gotten was 22nd last Oct! All of my high scorers have been in "BIG entry" challenges. Oh well, now I've got ANOTHER GOAL for 'O8!

you'll be on there this year

I'm guessing Neil was asking because the Jan. free study results aren't in there yet, so he didn't show up. And I'm not trying to rush you, either, just pointing out my guess as to why he asked to sign up.

Thanks for setting this up! I realize you want to hand it off, but hey, you took the first step. :)

I've added "top ten finishes" and "ribbon count" to the stats display

6 months in, and it's actually pretty easy to maintain

Bumping this thread to let everyone know a couple things:

1 - I finally updated it :)

2 - I'm hoping someone else will take things over for 2009

3 - I won't be continuing it even if no one else volunteers

Looks like there's going to be a decent shootout for 3rd place (3rd thru 8th are only 20 points apart)

You've done a great job this year Hopper. I found it to be a lot of work and I was only tracking the Top 5 when I did it.

I'm hoping to make a showing in the non-Irene, non-Timfy division...

My only blue ribbon doesn't appear. It says I have 3 top ten finishes when I have 4 and the one left out was the blue. I know this is lots of work and I don't care about it, it's just a list so no worries. :)

more than likely I've missed a dq which bumped you up to a blue from red? I'll check right now.

Any other errors, please report them to me ... what good is this list if it isn't accurate :)

Ahh yes, dang I forgot! Sorry, but like I said, don't go out of your way to fix it.

How much time do you put into this per week? I'm thinking about continuing it after you stop.

thanks

Already fixed :)

Once you figure out how to make a pivot table (I had to learn - it's easy), it takes about 5 minutes. It's very quick. One page of the spreadsheet has all the challenges and top finishers which you type in (10 usernames, everything else is copied down from the cells above). Then insert the pivot table on another sheet which is more or less created for you. The 1st six columns you see are created from scratch, but the formulas have already been done, so you just copy them from the previous weeks spreadsheet.

I'm sure I could walk you thru it with a 10 minute phone call if you get stuck.

Hey I have 2 ribbons and 5 top tens.

I might want to take this over for you if you can explain to me how you have it working.

Send me a PM and if you can convert it to Excel 2003. I don't have 2007 so I can't open it and I don't want to download the downgrade for me to open it because it causes issues with 2003.
