When a photo comes along and I think techniques were used that went outside the rules, it says to vote as if it were NOT and that it would be DQ'ed anyways if in fact it were outside those rules. However, I've always felt a bit annoyed and in all honesty vote lower than I would. However, I think if I feel this way, others might as well, and the person who actually didn't go outside the rules will end up at the bottom which sucks for him/her.
Is there anyway that after a photo has been submitted to the SC because a violation was thought to have taken place, then a stamp of "Approved" located somewhere near the photo could be displayed so that other viewers later on can say "Whoa...nice job, and in basic nonetheless." Instead of automatically thinking "He did THIS so he's getting a 3."
Just my 2 cents

I think I've seen something like that on photos before.... like 'this photo has passed validation' - but I could be nuts. If I am nuts, it's a brilliant idea and I can't imagine why it hasn't happened yet. :D |

"This Photo Has Been validated" shows up with some frequency when I'm voting, under the image & title. But when images of my own have been challenged and validated during voting, I can't see that verbiage on my own image page. Perhaps this is why you think it doesn't exist?

In some cases, they do add the text "This photograph has been validated" during voting. I think it depends on whether they think it's likely that people besides the person who requested validation would also assume it wasn't legit.
There are some (including me) who think getting that on your photo actually helps your score, which is probably why they don't do it every time.

If you vote a picture low because you think it violated the rules, and then it's validated, do you go back and change your vote?

And this is why we're told to 'vote as if it IS legal'. :-) If everyone voted as if it is legal, instead of appointing themselves judge, jury and executioner, it wouldn't be an issue. I just don't understand why anyone would vote down a pic they don't think is fair. Request validation, if it is not legal, it will be dq'd, doesn't matter if everyone and their brother gave it a 10. If it is legal, it deserves a fair vote. ...I guess I understand what people do, but not always why. :-( |

I have always tried to do as SC wishes and rated as if it was a kosher picture. But, every once in a while I do get ticked off at one picture or another and vote it lower. I have never gone back to re-view the photo in question before. Never thought about it. Probably will now!
And a new, slightly related question: When voting, you have the option of reporting a photo if you decide it is against the rules...or whatever. For a while, while a REAL newbie, I was reporting all of those nasty people who took a black and white photo and colored the main object in a basic challenge. Now... I feel really idiotic and dumb, not to mention stupid, since I found out that this is done in a ...uh...saturation process of some kind that IS legal in basic.
I know SC has enough to do than to be sending "You idiot!" notices back to those of us with feet firmly planted in mouths, but it would be nice to know that I was wrong. My biggest problem is that I really suck at post-processing and have no idea how to do so much that there is to do out there. I am learning, albeit slowly. For all of this... I firmly apologize to all of the SC personnel who read my extremely wrong tattles.

Dantzr makes a great post. I'm sure there are quite a few of us out there that don't know everything there is to know about photo-editing. Just because we see a shot and don't know how it was done, it does not mean that it is illegal! |
