This was my first submission, and it got a decent score in the Texture challege (among the top third), but I was really wresting with which photo to submit- as I'm sure you all do. I went with this one because the diagonal effect was somewhat unusual, but I knew the exposure could have been better and that it was really more "about" the baby than texture. My scores were really polarized, with roughly equal 10 and 2 votes (!?). Three [non-voting] friends each thought that I could have done better with an alternate shot, but no two could agree on which one. Please have a look...

Alternate Ideas

In retrospect, I might have fared better on average with ANY of the alternates (just by getting fewer 2's and more 6's than 5's). The Hammered shot was my original entry but I pulled it two hours before the deadline. "Abstract" was the inside of the same pitcher with a blue LED light shining on it. I felt that "Raisin" had only a tiny spot of texture, which the subject was feeling- not the viewer. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

I think you went with the right choice. It's the one I would have rated the highest. The others, although they had texture, didn't really have any feeling to them (except "raisin" whitch lacked texture).

Keeping the original picture in and you can keep the "10" that I gave it.

I agree with aaron and faidoi, the one you entered is the best. It may not be the best as to texture since a couple of the others are more "texture oriented", but the one you entered is far superior in appeal and still has enough "texture" in it to meet the topic, and to beat the others in score, even for the topic.

I think the raisin photo has a focal point that is better than the others. I like the lighting and the focus is on the raisin's texture alone. Great photo.

Great comments- thank you! My Conflict entry is faring a little better (around 6) and I have high hopes for Silence now that I'm starting to get a feel for it. This was my alternate for Conflict (too simplistic, but it had some good aspects)....

Outtake

I can see a membership in my future. ;-)

Your outtake is very cool. I love that background and the expressions on the faces of the people. How'd you do it?

scalvert:

I like your images and your style a lot. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your entries.

I really thought raisin was an excellent and interesting shot. I liked it much better than your challenge entry but I agree that you chose the right one for "texture."

gee. What am i doing in the forums in the middle of the night? I have a HUGE anatomy test tomorrow! I'm out of here! Happy photography discussing everyone...

Chris, regarding the Conflict outtake...

Simple photo. The background is a frame from the "Fantasia 2000" DVD paused on a television. Then I just hit the self-timer and "arm wrestled" my wife for the remote. The figured that the fiery background would be appropriate, and the red glow illuminates just a hint of the facial features. I would have submitted this one if I had been able to get a soft light on the remote (someone else submitted a similar photo). Glad you like it.

I also think you went with the right photo, but I agree the there seemed to be 2 things fighting for attention (baby or texture). I gave you a 6. Still, I think your submission was better than mine, yet I ranked slightly better than you ... so what do I know :)
