Just got this in an email, thought I would pass it along here. Heads up folks! My friend's step MOM just died of this symptom. THIS IS NOT AN URBAN LEGEND OR A SPOOF.
"FDA says: Ingredient in cough and cold medications, weight loss products linked to increased hemorrhagic stroke
This is a bit dated but still scary.
The FDA says it won̢۪t keep a list because companies change their formulas. Instead it advises folks to read the label (of which products, who knows-they won̢۪t even tell you what had PPA in the past!) and in this way determine which products are toxic. I will now read the labels of the products listed below in addition to all over-the-counter and prescription cough and cold medications (PPA used as a decongestant) and in over the counter weight loss products (not really my thing but mom dukes likes them).
All drugs containing PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE are being recalled.
STOP TAKING anything containing this ingredient. It has been
linked to increased hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in brain )
among women ages 18-49 in the three days after starting use
of medication. Problems were not found in men, but the F DA
recommended that everyone ( even children ) seek alternative
medicine.
The following medications contain Phenylpropanolamine:
Acutrim Diet Gum Appetite Suppressant
Acutrim Plus Dietary Supplements

I just found out and called the 800 # on the container for Triaminic and they informed me that they are voluntarily recalling the following medicines because
of a certain ingredient that is causing strokes and seizures in children :
Orange 3D Cold & Allergy Cherry (Pink)
3D Cold & Cough Berry
3D Cough Relief Yellow 3D Expectorant
They are asking you to call them at 800-548-3708 with the lot number on the box so they can send you postage for you to send it back to them, and they will also issue you a refund. If you know of anyone else with small children."

They took a lot of those off the shelf last year and reformulated them. A lot of the childrens OTC's are still being recalled. If you have serious concerns you can PM me, I'm an Rx nerd! :) |
