Does anyone know how I can do this? Or what I need?

Here̢۪s my situation... My kids love to get on the computer and do stuff but when they print something they print the same thing like 500 times, OR, they want to print everything. Well after about a ream of paper I thought well let me just remove the printer from the machine and boom they can't print. Well that didn't work either because they do have to print some things I mean after all they have a computer... Who has a computer and no printer right?

So what I am looking for is a way to view or see the actual document or the filename when they hit the print button and give me a pop up saying something like "Do you allow this print, yes or no"???

Can anyone help me?

For those of you that have kids on computers, how do you watch them?

BTW Ages 5-15 anything older than that they ought to know how to print something.

Just a wild hair idea ... have you considered discussing this with that wild tribe of kids?

13-18 year olds still have the same problem. When i was in high school had to run to the server room to cancel print jobs because some moron sent the worlds largest essay to the printer 5 times. I dunno how todo anything like that without software that designed to take complete control like the library uses.

But you can click on the printer icon on the lower right and cancel print jobs at any time. It works well for ones waiting to be printed but not so well for ones already printing.

Well I have told them that they can't print off everything and most of the time they can only print off 1 thing or whatever the case may be.

I just want to SEE what it is they are printing.

BTW they are 5 and 7 years old.

Hey Jeff glad to see you're back. I haven't seen you on in a while. As far as canceling a print job, well that would mean that I have to go down a flight of stairs, out the shed in the back yard, into the house which is about 80 feet away and into the kids room where the computer is. Might I also add that the printer is also in the house and I can't see what they are printing. So before I walk in and see all the paper on the floor I want to control it. And yes I am looking for that library type system. Thanks guys

This is what I had to do... I turn the printer off! Leave it connected. When they hit the print button, it will tell them it's off at which point they come ask you if they can print it. You can either turn the printer on or cancel the print job at this point. My son went through about 3 cartridges of ink before I thought of this. He's 8 and we've been doing it this way for about 3 years.

Had a similar problem with printing, so after using their allowance to buy nothing but paper and ink, they started to figure things out. Although, we do have one child willing to buy paper by the case. :(

You might want to look at software similar to this, that'll let you do remote queue management.
You can preview the jobs that are heading to the printer and approve/ deny them along the way.

FYI: That might be fine but my printer will just auto-turn on and print away. Yes, even if it's been off all day and the computer knows no difference. My printer isn't all that old so you will just have to do a couple 'test' runs to make sure that it will stay off.

My kids did this ... for about a day. I told them next time I caught them printing off scads of [worthless] full-color pages from the MyScene and Nickelodeon sites that they would be barred from using the computer and they would pay me out of their piggy banks for the ink and paper. One of them did it again sometime later and I followed through with my warning. Neither has done it since ... now they ask anytime they want to print off anything from a website. I'm not being a big meanie, either -- they can print things, they just understand now that they have to be responsible with it.

Unplug it then?
