In recent years, Fischer became better known for his criticism of the United States and venomous anti-Semitism. Fischer called the September 11, 2002 terrorist attacks on America "wonderful news"
They got the year wrong. Shame for someone to call something that killed so many innocent people "Wonderful News"

30+ years ago he was my idol. I wore out the "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess" (or similar title) book I owned back then. I can't remember any specifics of opening moves and various strategies of his anymore, but I still enjoy a game of chess once in awhile.
I knew he had made the news for some off the wall comments in the past few years, but hadn't really followed it much. Certainly was an interesting fellow, and no matter what else is said about him, I'll always think of him first as an awesome chess player. |

Great chess player, but otherwise, basically, a raving lunatic. I, too, was in awe of him when I was young, but the bloom started falling off that rose something like 30 years ago. He has some serious mental problems :-(
Still, as someone else said, vaya con dios, Roberto! You'll always be remembered.

Interesting that he died at 64. A year for every square, I guess. |

He was working on a way to make chess more interesting and less methodical. He called it Random Chess and I think the idea is that you randomly rearrange the peices in the back row.

Yep, but it also says that the terrorist attacks on the US happened in 2002 so I don't think we can accept them as a beacon of fact. :P |

Yeah, in March he will turn 65. Guess he ran out of space or tempo.
