I've realized that quite a few people use tone mapping. What is it? and can I do it on photoshop Cs3? |

It's a way of increasing the dynamic range of colours in a picture. There's a specific piece of software that does it called Photomatix (the trial version is free), but you can also do something similar using just CS3, and there is a tutorial that tells you how to. |

It is more than a gimmick than anything, I did a whole bunch of stuff with it a couple of years ago. You lose interest in it pretty fast and then it gets to the stage you have to scream whenever you see something that has been tone-mapped. Mainly because people overuse it to pieces. Sometimes it works okay, but only to the extent that the viewer doesn't see that the image has been tone-mapped.
This shot for example is way over tone mapped, as are most of the images I used it on.

I'd argue the "gimmick" part of what kiwiness said. There are plenty of applications where it is useful, although it is generally over applied, and sometimes used in situations that would have been better without it. However, it does wonders in allowing a photograph to actually capture a dynamic range approaching that which we see naturally.
Bear_Music does a lot of work with tone mapping, much of it very subtle - check out his porfolio, I bet there'll be a few shots at least where you wouldn't even think he had mapped them.
(By the way, kiwiness, I really like the photo you posted - mostly because it looks over processed, and more like a painting - an instance where the scene lends itself to that.)

Or you can check out a new HDR/Tonemapping app called Wukong.. Free to test at the moment (will be a retail product eventually)..
