*Bump* for day forum folks

David, that's a wonderful blog, but I have a complaint; for my older eyes, the light-on-black text is very disturbing. The contrast is so pronounced that when I tab to another site with a neutral background I am actually seeing residual bars across it. If I close my eyes, the bars are swimming in my "vision", and it takes like 30 seconds for them to go away.

Have pity on those of us with aged eyesight and change this?

I see what bear means, but I think it's the font rather than the color. Try what a sans-serif would look like.

Awesome guys! Will you be serving any of those home made scones with this? ;-)

My eyes aren't as old as Bear's, and I prefer not to read light text on dark background. It's nothing to do with the font.

Thanks Robert for your encouragement and also critique. I'll try a larger font. I'm somehow drawn to the black background with light font, more for philosophical/artistic reasons than practical such as "can anyone actually read this?". I appreciate hearing the feedback and seriously will consider other options.

I do understand what you're saying; at a basic "aww, gee" level it looks wicked cool to have that light-on-black text, and there's the sense of light rising from the darkness, illumination becoming, all that. Nevertheless, when these concerns get in the way of communication, you have a fundamental conflict.

Making the text larger is not going to help; it's the visual banding that causes the damage. I click on one of Thomas's lovely images, and when the larger version comes up I am seeing light/dark horizontal bands running across it. This is not good.

You can use a deep, rich grey and we won't have anywhere near as much of an issue with this...

Great job David. I loved reading about the Enchanted Valley and how us old farts get the bright idea to hike up in the mountains with more weight than we are sensible enough to leave behind. Now if we can just convince you to include more pix so we can see and read about these great adventures from the comfort of our heated home it would be perfect. Maybe I would not have to go there myself that way .... well, not likely.

Thanks for posting.

I enjoyed the secret garden post. Described well something I was trying to capture at the weekend. Too often we are rushing from place to place and don't take the time to just be.

Wonderful writing and of course Thomas' photos are always beautiful. My friends think I'm crazy for going on silent retreats, but those retreats are a needed part of my life (that I don't get to do often enough.) How wonderful it would be to do them in such naturally beautiful locations.

Excellent start to the blog, and I will be a frequent visitor!

The new, muted blue background works much better, thank you David :-)

Come on down Jason! We've had some great January sunsets of late and a sweet sunrise yesterday (Sunday). Thanks for the encouragement on the blog. We'll be updating weekly, usually on Sunday night. Congrats on your recent ribbon nature photo in Rivers and Streams!

I'm in NY. It's very cold. Too cold to go outside and shoot.

But the Giants are going to the Super Bowl. Anything is possible.

Love the Blog.

great blog - I like the thoughts and the photos, they both are wonderful.

I like the attitude of slowing down. That is one reason that I re-entered the world of photography.

I plan to check in from time to time....

Beautiful site, guys! Pleasing to the eye. Glad you got away from the black. This is an easy to view, non-eyestraining site!!

Way to go!!

I was thinking about this.

Dad charliebaker gets to do the writing.

Son zoomdak only takes the photos.

Does that mean that children should be seen but not heard?
