hehe
what i mean is that i think it would be cool if after the challenge, we could see the 3 winning pictures are bigger than 640x480. it would be really cool to see them all big and look at the details and stuff.
what do yall think? |

Remember, the suggestion was to blow up the WINNERS.

i still think this is a good idea. i'd like to be able to see the winning pics bigger. any way this is doable? |

This is only do-able if you can get the winners to submit a new, larger version of the original. (I have no clue about the coding, however, and that's probably what you're really asking. Oh well, gonna go ahead anyway...)
The problem is that you may or may not be able to recreate the look you got in the winning entry. For example, while I haven't won and so this is moot, my shots would not look nearly so clean as they do at 640x480 because my camera's maximum size is 1024x768. The more I can "shrink" the sharper they get. Given this, I do a lot of my post-processing at the smaller size -- that way I can control exactly the way things will look in the finished product.
For those with megapixel cameras, I guess it's entirely possible -- but I'd also guess we'd have "variations" similar to the differences between two different sized chemical darkroom prints.
I can just hear people now, "How on earth did he/she win -- this looks horrible at 800x600!!!" *grin*

yeah. basically what I thought is that they'd have to upload them. but yeah, good pt. on the downsampling/sharpening thing. |

I guess anyone who feels so inclined can post a bigger, or re-edited, or otherwise similar picture somewhere else after the voting is over. I know that doesn't make it accessible on the dpchallenge site, but would give people that access if they want it.

I think maybe we would be concentrating too much on the winning.
I mean, guys, we are all artists. I know we hand out awards and all but don't we realize there are about 20 photos each week (maybe more) that may deserve a spot in the top three? It's sorta like when Marlon Brando didn't go to the Ocsars..he though it strange to give places to artisitic expression.
This is just my opinion (why do folks need to state that..of course it's just my opinion :-) But I like the site aimed more at the learning/contribution aspect more than the "who got the electronic ribbon".
I think we do a fantastic job of highlighting great photos in the "How did they do that" section. But putting more emphasis on the weekly top three is not my idea of more fun. |

hehe. i hear that hokie.
omg, i just had the greatest idea. maybe this has been suggested before, but if not, here goes:
on the voting, what if there was a drop down menu that let you give a 'special award' to a photo you thought deserving. there would be a bunch of categories on there, like:
"Grossest" "Artiest" "Most Creative" "Most Shmaltzy" "Dumbest" "Sexiest" "Best Focus" "Most Hangable (On the Wall)" "Most Obscure" "Funniest" "Scariest" "Most Science Fiction-y" "Tells a Story"
Etc.
It would be as simple as picking it off a drop-down menu.
Then when the results were posted, images that had received the most awards for their respective category could also be listed.
This would give all KINDS of recognition to every niche and creative-style on here, instead of just 'lumping' everyone together into one undifferentiated, fused, burrito of results.
D? L? WHaddya think?!

Magnetic, I love that idea :). I'm for anything that helps people to give more input on the photos in the final results than just the average score. |

Magnetic, I think that's a great idea! I'd also had cutest to the list, to satisfy the baby/pet crowd, and maybe most shocking to satisfy that group as well.

Magnetic..that is a FANTASTIC idea!!!!
Absolutely FANTASTIC!!!!!
We really need to get people more involved in the wide range of photos here..not just the popular ones. That drop down menu and all those categories is great!
We need that instituted ASAP. |

I dig the idea of other categories as well -- though it does seem somewhat high school yearbookish... *grin*
I also had another thought as to why I'd prefer NOT to see enlarged images on the site. I'm sure other people have their monitor resolutions set up differently than mine, but I pretty much just fit a vertical shot in my browser window with a little bit of extra room to spare. I'm of the opinion that images are meant to be seen in their entirety, not a portion at a time. I love taking 360 degree panoramics and even though I'd love for people to be able to see them at a larger size, I intentionally keep them small enough so that they can be seen all at once on the screen.

I also like the rop down menu idea. I think it would bring satisfaction to more people especially those who love to go for things like the gross out factor. Personally, I would love to occasionally win funniest. |

I suggested an idea similar, but a little less yearbooky a few weeks ago in the forums. Mine were more like:
My favorite photo. Most creative. Best interpretation of the topic. Most far off-topic.
But yes, I think it's a wonderful idea. What categories would you like to see?
