I've been playing with my Christmas present - CS3! - and have been blown away by the new features available in Camera Raw. Lots of nifty sliders that perform their magic on the image, I know not how. And that worries me - is it perhaps time for an update to the "you may/you may not" section of the Basic Editing rules that address the RAW conversion in more detail than it does now? Are there perhaps features in RAW that we should know to absolutely not use if we're editing for Basic?

As an example, take the new "Clarity" slider - I have no idea whether this feature applies its magic to the whole or only to parts of the image...

It would be useful, if there are RAW features that must not be used in Basic, that these be listed somewhere in the rules. I'd just like to not inadvertently use a function in RAW that works essentially as a "spot edit" but I didn't know that was the case. Which RAW functions are "global" and which ones are not?

Anyone on the SC have any thoughts about this? Am I worrying for nothing?

The ones you have to worry about are not actually new to CS3, but have been present for a while. The one that specifically is a problem is the lens vignetting slider. This one acts locally (outer edges of the frame) and is definitely illegal in Basic.

The only one I know of is the one that does vignettes. That's been ruled to be illegal in basic if you use it for editing, because it is selective. I think you can use vignette as a correction tool (if your lens vignettes, to remove that vignette). And I guess the same is true of the other lens adjustments. As far as I know everything else in Camera Raw is legal; stay away from the lens adjustments panel and you are good to go.

Yep, that one I did know about - read up some past posts in the forums. :) Anything else?

That's a darn nice present CS3... Santa didn't leave anything like that at MY house! ;-) j/k

Glad you got such a powerful piece of equipment to assist you with your photography. I don't know about the rule set (so to speak), but am sure that kirbic won't lead you astray (or Bear_Music for that matter). Play, practice, and hone your skills with CS3 - it'll pay off immeasurably, I'm sure! Congrats on that terrific present.

Thanks! I had not thought I needed/wanted an upgrade from CS2 until I got to play with the CS3 demo a while back - the improvements in this newest version really do make the upgrade worthwhile. So now I have to hit the books again and figure out how to make the best use of it!
