Hello Good People!

Thought I'd share a project long-time in the making.

A little over a year ago, my organisation's office was in Downtown NYC, 11th and 2nd Avenue. A deceptive little nook in the Lower East Side, transforming in atmosphere, mood and passersby from day to night. A very interesting place to observe people!

Anywho, if you know Manhattan, there are loads of parking meters everywhere. Since it's the Lower East, there are a lot of artsy folk there that stroll the streets once the work force moves on and scurries home. Along with the meters are loads of stickers that adorn them. Some interesting, some political and controversial (some quite strong that I am going to omit for the DPC crowd) and some just odd or funny.

I have quite a few but here are the first four:

So, whatcha think? I would love to get some feedback.

What an interesting project. I love them.

I would love to come up with an interesting project of my own, but I just never seem to be able to come up with a good idea:(

Cool project, I have an ongoing project of my own of park benches. This might be the inspiration I need to start getting them together.

I don't think that there is a parking meter within 25 miles of the place where I live. That is an interesting project. I expect that they will all soon be replaced with something electronic and automatic. It's fun to document something that is now common, that may not be around much longer.

Thanks guys!

Gina, you know, I was just out one day for a break from work and noticed the stickers on the meters and thought it would make a great project. I bet there are tons of things right in plain site around you that would make for an interesting project. Just gotta go out and pick one!

Wanna hear something sick about the meters in Manhattan? Every 25 cents is just ten minutes! AND, if you get a ticket for an expired meter, its 65 BEANS! The Traffic & Parking Violations Bureau in NYC is notorious and has been involved in many scandals over the years.

Thanks for the posts!

Ditto. Maybe even further than that :-) There may be meters in Hyannis, but I have never noticed them.

Hahaha! Answer me this: if the meter is bagged, how do they KNOW you're using no more than your free 2 hours? JejejeĆ¢„Ā¢

ON a vaguely related note, when I lived in NYC I used to sometimes go around feeding meters just for the hell of it, to give random strangers the thrill of free parking...

Actually, sometimes they do indeed do that here in NYC or they dont require feeding the meter at all on holidays.

Ya know Bear, feeding the meter like that is actually illegal. It's a mean city and Guliani was a mean mayor!
