I am looking for a faster 50mm lens for lower light conditions to go on my Nikon D40. And at a good price. The lens that I am thinking about is the Nikon 50mm f1.8 D AF. Any feedback or comments would most helpful.

Cheers,
JKH

If it's anything like the Canon 50mm f/1.8, it's a very good buy for the money. The only problem is that it won't autofocus on the D40.

SamDoe is right. The 50mm f/1.8 is an excellent lens, especially for the price, but you'll have to focus it manually on the D40.

Buy it.

If you search the forums for the same question, you'll find lots of threads saying the same thing. :)

Just be careful with the DOF - it's VERY narrow at 1.8.

Also, like most lenses, it's sharpest a stop or two down from max.

I don't want to hijack the thread (but I guess I'm going to); is the 50mm 1.8 better than, say, the 85mm 1.8, or is it mainly an issue of cost? I have never liked standard lenses (and tend to not even shoot at the "long" end of my 18-55 except in desperate situations -- ie, when it's mounted and I can't get close enough to use it at 24 or 35). I was thinking an 85 or even something a bit longer might be nice, but so many people like the 50mm AF (my 50mm is a MF, and I don't use it enough, I suppose) I wondered what I'm missing.

I think there's a question in there somewhere . . .

I think the new version 50 1.8 (I have the 1986 model and that's built solidly) is a little light and feels flimsier, though I've no doubt the build quality is up to scratch. The bokeh is better than you'd expect compared to the canon 50mm 1.8, but not as good as the nikon 50mm 1.2, or the 85mm 1.8.

It's a great lens, but it may be tricky to manual focus. I hear the d40's viewfinder is better than my d50's, but there is no way I'd want to use it on a day to day basis at max aperture without the autofocus and I suspect that it will be almost as hard on a d40; then again, I've never tried, so perhaps it's just a question of learning.

I like mine, much better than my frosted glass lenses!

There is another very similar thread going right now, here is the link: 50mm thread
There are some good tips in that thread about focusing with the older manual lenses.
I believe that with the D40, the aperture will function auto, but focus will be manual, as the D series nikon lenses need the motor that the D40 does not have built in.
Everyone who has a 50mm f1.8 nikkor seems to like it.
