I have noticed that since joining DPC I have become a lot more critical about photos. Whenever I look in a magazine or at a calendar or a catalogue I really look at the photos and find myslef pulling them to pieces. Honestly, a calendar I looked at not long ago had the most revolting photos on it. They were terribly exposed, the colour was all wrong and the crop.............!!!

On another occassion someone showed me their graduation photo which was in general a really good photo, better than I could have done. But the photographer really stuffed it up when they had to photoshop in some background as the group went past the edges of the background. I could have done way better and would have been embarresed to give the photo out as it was.

Does everyone do this as well. Is is DPCitis? Is this a good thing or not.

Definitely DPCitis! We do this regularly, especially with ads.
Where I do find it a problem is when family/friends show me their snapshots and and I have a real struggle sometimes to enjoy the lovely subject rather than critique their technique (or lack thereof).

Tell me about it. I have a digital photo kiosk in my shop and my customers always want to show me their fantastic shots. Grin and bear it is the best I can sometimes do.

Yep, true, true. But I am glad I joined because for me it has put the photography bar higher and is making me reach higher than I ever thought I would. And I still have sooo far to go. I am so glad you introduced me Judi. I can still remember that moment when you opened DPC to show me/us (the group you were teaching) some of your photos. That was the moment I became hooked.

My DPCitis drives everyone insane when I'm trying to get my pics taken.. I make people retake pics..
A better side effect is that everywhere I look is a picture to be taken.. Even the mundane seems beautiful..

Yep thats another thing I have noticed. I never drive, or walk anywhere without having my photographer eyes on. I see a photo in a lot of things I wouldn't have notice before. Also when I watch TV I can often be heard saying "Ohh... that would be a beautiful photo!"

Well, I use to do this quite a bit after I first joined DPC a bit over three years ago. I remember friends (not from DPC) would e-mail me a photo or a link to a photo, and I would send them back a critique! Bad, very bad.

Of course, anything that is driving us take certain behaviors to extremes, to be obsessive and/or compulsive, is probably a negative behavior.

I found out a few things. One, most people show an image so that we can share in their joy or triumph of a certain moment, not for a critique. If they want a critique, they will ask for it. Two, I was wasting alot of emotional energy just getting worked up and forming opinions about images that didn't matter, either to me or the photographer. Three, I found that I was getting a bit cranky when I looked at any image, thinking to myself that every image needed some type of a response from me. Four, I compared myself, photography and post processing, to others constantly, which was turning into negative thought patterns for me.

It was helpful for me to realize these things and be able to get past them. I found that my response was stealing my joy, which is a big problem to long term survival in photography. And, in reality, I did NOT want to have the responses and attitudes I was manifesting, so I had to intentional work to change my behavior. Not a huge thing, but it definitely made a positive difference.

So, these are just a few thoughts from my own personal journey here in DPC-land:)

Yeah, it's terrible. Sometimes I feel like the only person in a room who can see that a snapshot is out of focus. It's easier to not say anything, smile, and comment on how lovely the photos are. ;-)
