I thought elves are just slightly shorter than humans, are immortal, fought in both great wars of Middle Earth and have since then migrated to the Undying Lands? :P

Depends on the focal length of your camera. The longer it is, the less vignetting you'll get.
Originally posted by Patents4u: OK. After a brief hunt in the photo closet, here's what I own right now. Oly 5050 (nice macro ability by itself) - Nikon 50mm 1.8 (52mm filter). 41mm to 52mm lens adapter (5050 has 41mm filter thread). So, I can put the adapter on my 5050, and that will get me to the 52mm size I need for the Nikon lens....so what do I need, a 52mm-52mm macro coupler - is that right? |
Yup, that's right. And if you can't find the coupler, you can always glue two UV filters together or try handheld first! :D

Alright, well here's what I've come up with for my olympus e20.
General Brand
62mm-49mm Step-Down Ring (Lens to Filter) ...More Info
B&H #GBSDR6249
$8
General Brand
49mm Macro Coupler - For Mounting Two Lenses of 49mm Face to Face ...More Info
MFR #ROKUNAR ΓΆ€ΒΆ B&H #GBMC49
$8
and a pentax 50mm 2.0 k-mount lens that a friend was going to sell to me for $20.
Is this reasonable? is the aperture too low at 2.0, should I look for a 1.8 or 1.4? The camera lens is 35 mm - 140 mm equiv. It has 62mm filter mounts.
I'm not sure those adaptors are what I need, so if someone could confirm this is what I need, and that lens is reasonable I'll jump on it :)
(Also, if someone has an extra 50mm that they don't need for a pretty cheap price, you can PM me)
Thanks

jrs915:
If you can borrow the lens from your friend first, I'd suggest that you try a few handheld shots and see if you're happy with the results first. No sense in putting down some cash on an unknown and then ending up not liking the results.
When handholding the 50mm lens, use some sticky tape, cloth or similar material to line the edges of the lens so that you can hold it right up to your camera's lens and not scratch the front element.

I tried my Pentax 50 1.4 reversed on my F717 and it turned out OK. I then tried it on my Canon 50 1.4 and quickly realised that the weight of the lens was probably doing no good to the focus motor or front element of the lens. If you have a lens that changes lenght when focusing, I'd think seriously about the consequences on the lens focus motor and the internal focusing mechanisms before hanging a lens off it. At the very least, support the reversed lens with your hands at all times. |

Of course you can... any fast prime will do although most opt for a 50mm since it's small, light and cheap.

It just occured to me... every photography forum just HAS to have a macro guy in it. DPChallenge has Jacko with his Sigma 105mm... DPReview has Frank Phillips (the extreme insect macro guy - MP-E 65mm and MT-24EX)... And my local camera forum (www.MyKamera.com) has me!!! :D
