Details: Capture your impression of "childhood" without having a child in your picture!
Stats: You have rated 139 of 139 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 139 images (100%) in this challenge.
I read Don's tutorial (which was very good), and commented on all photos in a challenge. Now how do I get one of those cool comment ribbons. Seeing how I won't be getting one soon for my photos I thought I would try to get one for comments. :) |

Thanks again! :) But don't forget Robert, who now owns a shiny new red ribbon (I got his hand-me-down). I'm frankly stunned to be anywhere in the vicinity of he whose expertise in shooting water-based landscapes knows no bounds. Congrats, Bear!
On another topic, I finally had enough of people complaining in another thread that they can't compete against people who've won multiple ribbons, so instead I created the brand-spankin' new monthly "shoot a shot, get comments" challenge.
I hope to see plenty of TS participation, as either photographer/commenters or just as commenters.

I missed a perfect opportunity today for the birds challenge. I pulled up at a red light on a highway crossing and there were two geese standing on the corner. Imagine my amazement when the walk sign came flashing on and the two geese starting crossing the highway in the crosswalk! I grabbed the camera off the front seat, flipped off the lens cover, hit the on switch, sighted that I had both geese and flashing walk sign with stopped traffic, hit the button and got "no card"! It was home in my computer! Damn! |
This is why, when I remove a card to the reader, I always always always always put another card in the camera right then and there. I alternate two identical cards.

I'm glad to see you get a ribbon. That DQ'd shot always looked fake to me, I didn't see how those stars were possible in any natural rendering of the scene. But I wasn't about to make waves over it.
As far as feeling "better" because I have a red now instead of a yellow, not really... For me a ribbon is a ribbon, and the score is what I look at. Yellow, Red, Blue, it's always a crapshoot; just depends who entered what that week. Same for the honorables, actually. So I don't pay that much heed. I'm just happy whenever I break 7, and dream of one time in my life breaking 8, just so I can say i did it :-)

Well I have been caught out without a card in my camera before but at least I get about 20 6mp images on my camera's internal memory. Better than nothing.

I think you just go to this thread:
100% comments club
Post your stats (challenge title, how many images voted and commented, etc.) and they'll point you to the right graphic. At least that's what I did when I did it. Congrats :)

I have five cards (2 gig, 1 gig, 512 meg, 256 meg, 128 meg). I am regularly carrying my camera around without a card because I always forget to put the new one in (I don't have a good place to store the cards where I store my camera, which needs to be placed out of reach of my two and a half year old daughter, who regularly says, "Mine! Mine camera!). Oh well, opportunities are missed, others present themselves. But then I've never missed two geese crossing the street in a crosswalk, either!
Best,
Bruce

In a totally unrelated to photography aside, I went to the local US vendor of Volkswagens to get a quote on a Jetta. It had a "transoceanic shipping charge" listed. Huh? Turns out Jettas are made in Mexico. Ha! But I'll wait - the diesel version comes out this summer, and it gets nearly twice the mileage of the gasoline version. Costs more, too. I suppose I should do some math to see if it's worth it....
On a related note, I do have a few new shots from the pond at Wiesbaden in my portfolio. My entry in the upcoming Birds challenge is completely unrelated to those posted, of course. |

Robert, congratulations to you too...
LOL Deb about the Jetta thing - a VW made in Mexico!! And you over there in Germany have to pay for it to be shipped over! PS my new bf plans to get a diesel Jetta eventually too. Further proof great minds think alike :-) |

Well I will have a photo in Birds, from then on it is up to the repair techs, as I have dislodged the shutter mirror when cleaning with pressurized air.
On the medical side the morphine has stabilized the pain level and I feel more humane, and a little more with it, and have cut the morphine dosage in half.
Deb, what does a jetta look like? I'd be careful of what comes out of Mexico, and hope it has a border pass, HE HE.:):):)
Tomorrow night 26th is Australia day and Carol has set up a barbeque for those that gave all there support to us during recent events, that meens everybody will be toasted Aussie style even if you are not here. Cheers Brian

Well, thanks Ernie for asking......I thought I'd try something new, like maybe only offering relevant thoughts instead of just blathering for the sake of noise.
Oops! Too late!
Don, you can't quit, you're born into this, and like the Eagles song, ""Relax" said the night man, "We are programmed to receive. You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.""
You haven't let anyone else that threatened to go away, get away, so, tough it out! LOL!!!
Deb, VW has been making cars in Mexico, and Brazil, for decades. You'll love the Jetta diesel, especially if you haven't driven a VW diesel in a while, they rock!
Jelena, your post about online communities was interesting, and from my experience, pretty accurate. I was a member of a Jaguar community for a few years, actually rose to a point where I was a semi-major player in it, and I watched as the powers-that-be abused their power, got Machiavellan about it, and damn near took the whole thing down. It ended up way too close to having people in court over what boiled down to self-indulgent, control issues by a very few. It was really sad the way that a couple people were perfectly fine with the possibility of trashing the site where over 50, 000 enthusiasts went to share ideas and information for their own interests.
People got hurt over it, and quite a few Jaguar enthusiasts were darn near deprived of an awesome asset because of these people and some of us ended up quite disillusioned, and regretful over having put in many thousands of hours of hard work and dedication. Personally, I had two and a half years in as a list administrator of one of the 16 lists, and I know I'll never be involved to that extent ever again because of the experience. It's sad when good help is kicked to the curb with no consideration to the people affected by their departure. I got e-mails for close to a year afterwards from friends and strangers alike offering their thanks and best wishes for my efforts over the years.
There's that blathering again!!!
Relevant thoughts? I'd like to say that this site has an awful lot going for it, and I speak from a position of considerable experience in how a site is both run and received, and you would be hard pressed to find another that is as civil and helpful as this. The people who work this have an incredible tolerance for a lot of behavior and insensitive feedback from people who have no clue about what it takes just to run a site without even attempting to be able to comprehend what goes along with trying to manage so many vast and varying personalities.......especially when so many think that the whole thing is about their interests. I am constantly amazed at the amount of whining and carping that SC has to let go in their normal day to day business.
My undying gratitude goes out to all those who labor selflessly for this valuable, and terrific site.
As to the site's benefits and for me at TS in particular? I cannot even begin to list the amazing growth and development of not only my photographic skills, but the enrichment of my life through my involvement with so many wonderful people here at DP Challenge. This "Ragtag Group" has become a part of my life and taught me so much I can never hope to thank you all for in the way of.......well, just being yourselves. The consideration and encouragement have been priceless, and I have laughed and grumbled, loved and worried with some of the finest people I have met in my life right here.
One of the reasons that I haven't been very active is because I have finally become a professional photographer on many levels. And that has absolutely, unequivocally come from my being here and getting a real perspective on how that is realized. I am finally comfortable in who I am as a photographer, and with the tools I've acquired at DPC, and the attitudes and perspectives developed right here at TS, I have something special that is very marketable as long as I have the guts and commitment to work at it and follow through. I have sold some images at the gallery where I started as a sideline.....I'm now stocking images there and have a working arrangemnet. I will be showing/exhibiting/having a meet&greet in March or April at a nearby gift shop in the center of Carlisle, a college and military town, where I will be also maintaining a stock of photographs, framed and dry-mounted, and I have started into projects for images that are being used for a local law firm and a web designer that are straight up paying jobs.
I would never have had either the confidence or the techniques necessary to do any of this before I got to DPC for techniques, and TS for the unbelievable support and encouragement that helped me to develop who I am as a photographer.
That's as real as it gets......and certifiable proof that a positive influence can be, and is, imminently possible from an Internet community.
Oh.....and let me also state that it has been a privilege to share in some of the wonderful parts of the lives of you all. To have you share these special, and life-changing experiences is really something awesome.
ETA: JerseyGenie Congrats on taking the step to commit to your future health. Please feel free to contact me at any time to talk, or commiserate....I have taken that road myself at my doctor's suggestion. (He said I can deal with it now, or wait 'til the threat of diabetes and/or heart & circulation issues force me to deal with it!) I started December 4th and I'm feeling much better already.
And Jeffrey, congrats on your 4th place......more congrats on your 3rd!

Jeb, congrats on following your dream! :) That's really exciting. I immediately thought of you at the zoo here on our GTG, partly because I'm heading there now for a bird shot.
Hey, is anyone on TS interested in trying out a new experiment in learning and sharing I just started? Not a big commitment - just enter a shot and comment on at least 10 photos a month. I'm sort of surprised TSers aren't entering in droves, so I thought I'd try to drum up interest one more time.
Here's the thread with the details.

I missed this thread until Terry hipychik pointed it out last night. I just glanced at it last night and wasn't too sure, but your last explanation convinced me.
And Jeb, big congrats from me as well. It sounds like you found your dream! |
