In the spirit of helping people learn, and as an alternative to the debate about a normal DPC challenge limited to people who haven't won ribbons, I hereby launch what I hope will be a monthly themed commenting challenge.

Basically, let's help the folks who feel like they're in a rut. We all have our own ideas of what makes a good photo, so there's nothing magic about one comment vs. another; they're all good as long as they're sincerely made in the spirit of sharing our opinions.

Here's the idea for people who enter a photo:
1) Shoot ONE photo for that month's theme. I'm saying one so this isn't the burden of a typical month-long side challenge. For February 2008, I chose "a natural scene" as the theme. Interpret it as you will.
2) Put it in your portfolio. If it's not here on DPC, just tell me in a post in this thread where it is.
3) In your comments on the photo, tell us what you were trying to do:
- going for an emotional reaction?
- experimenting with a new technique?
- trying out a new lighting scheme?
- combination?
- anything else you want the commenters to know (e.g., focal length on a zoom lens)?
4) Post the settings (aperture, ISO, and shutter speed), camera, and lens used
5) Don your thickest skin.
6) Take every comment seriously. That doesn't mean you have to agree, just that you agree to consider what it says.
7) Comment on at least 10 other photos in the challenge. That's "at least," because you, the commenter, will benefit more if you do more. Commenting on others' photos is a HUGE opportunity to think about what moves you, what impresses you, what you like/dislike, etc.

Here's the idea for commenters (which I hope will include people who haven't entered photos):
1) Read the photographer's comments on the shot.
2) Comment on the images. Feel free to comment on the technical aspects, but don't forget your reactions, too. You might want to read Posthumous' excellent tutorial on commenting.
2) This is not about simply sharing photos, but rather sharing opinions. If you think something could be improved, tell the photographer. YOU are 100% qualified to share YOUR opinion; no prior experience or arbitrary level of expertise needed. This exercise will fail if everyone merely says "cool shot!" and the like.

I'll keep a list in this first post of everyone entering a photo, with a link to their entry. That'll make it easy to find them all.

So post below if you decide to enter, and I'll keep up. And then come back once you've posted your image so I can link to it!

Hey, ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' levyj413! Great idea! Definitely count me in - but can I link to an image somewhere else since I don't have a portfolio here? I promise to be good about it. ;)

And, since you've added the commenting clause, I'll be sure to do that, too!

Good idea, Levy :-) I get PLENTY Of comments, so I won't bother "entering", but I'll be happy to do some commenting on your running list.

Add me to the list, My comments though not real technical will be reactionary. I have a rhino hide so all can fire away, in all comments I get to see another's POV good or bad.

As an additional option, you could always choose a scene you can get back to, and see what you could do better given the comments you receive. In other words, shoot your best shot and submit it here. Let the commenters do their thing, then go back and reshoot taking into consideration the reaction/advice you received. Just a thought!

Oh, and I'll comment, though I can't promise I'll make it all of 'em.

That's a good idea, Deb. So one entry and an optional reshoot.

i will enter a photo and comment.
01/25/2008 12:56:25 PM · #16
I'll do both.
01/25/2008 03:13:04 PM · #17
Hey, I thought of another rule for photographers entering this thing: you have to explain in your comments what you were trying to do:
- were you going for an emotional reaction?
- were you experimenting with a new technique?
- were you trying out a new lighting scheme?
etc.

And commenters: read the photographer's thoughts before commenting.

We're not trying to preserve anonymity here, so think more along the lines of a gallery showing than a voting contest.

Jeffrey, I'll be a commenter for the first month.

Also...It's a great idea for the photogs to include their comments with the photo, and I would also suggest they provide the details of their exposure settings.

Excellent point. Added it!

Anybody else? I seem to remember having seen many more people complaining that they can't get serious feedback on their shots. Here's your chance!

I'll play! This will seem like no trouble at all on the heels of a 30-day side challenge. One picture and 10 comments (minimum) for February it is! I tend to shoot a lot of living things so a re-shoot may not be an option, but a re-process definitely will be. Maybe post the original with the edit so people know what there is to work with (like a different crop or whatever)?

Brilliant idea (don't let it go to your head, young man!).
01/25/2008 07:30:55 PM · #24
Very much like to, as photog. and commenter.
01/25/2008 08:00:43 PM · #25
I'll do both. Thanks much.
