If you take pictures all month, put up 1 a day for 30 days, and get some good comments/advice etc. can you take one and put it in the Free Study Challenge, even though it's already gotten some attention? Or is this an unwise move?

You can do that - people do it all the time for Free Studies and Best of challenges. The rules only require it not be in a previous challenge. You'll often see folks enter a second shot from the same shoot in both a weekly challenge and a Free Study. If it's your favorite for the month, go for it. But hide the version that is currently in your portfolio. |

The only downside might be that someone may know who it is from. Other than killing some of the anonymous nature of voting, I don't see a problem. I will sometimes not realize that a shot of mine is good enough until it gets some attention elsewhere. A member here may chance to stumble across it, but it does not seem like a major problem. |

Keep in mind that people have much higher standards for main challenges than for side challenges and other photos that you post on your own. So just because you got a bunch of great comments during a side challenge does not guarantee that the thing will do well in a main challenge. I've done this sort of thing three times -- the first one did well (my third highest score), the second one tanked, and the third one got a combination of supportive and DNMC comments and ended up somewhere around the middle. So I am not sure if I really came out that much ahead. |
