I was a block away from my house, standing just off the sidewalk on a mound of dirt taking pictures of a fence, and some string hanging from the fence. And three men started yelling at me from the house across the street. I could barely hear them, as I had my headphones in, but I turned around, and they started telling me I wasn't allowed to.

I told them the photos were for myself, and that I was allowed to. He said no, and he threatened me, and told me that I needed to go home. He was "protecting his neighborhood" even though I lived like five houses down from him.

This guy that did most of the talking was maybe 25 years old. Hispanic. Wearing a wife beater. Didn't seem like someone that would know much about this kind of thing. Anyway, I would like to finish up my roll before it gets dark.

Anyone have the law against this? I was searching for it, but never found the actual law.

Thanks a lot.

Forget the law. Always walk away from these situations.

Yes, some people can get so upset. It's best to just RUN.:)

Take a picture of him and explain you need it for evidence.
(This is not advice, but posted for your entertainment only).

I agree, best to stay away from him, especially since he seemed very angry with you....

That̢۪s happened to me a couple times. I try to explain but end up walking away. Then again I̢۪ll tell the person it̢۪s for a contest (challenge) on the internet and they get all excited that their photo is going to be on the net. Like Charlie̢۪s picture of his work bench. By the way I̢۪m printing a copy and framing it for him. Now that is one organized man.

I've taken pictures there many times before. I've been living in my house for three years. Never had a problem before. It's a nice spot. If I go for a walk, that's where I go. It's just nice, and quiet, and there's always something new.

I really don't want to stop going there if I don't have to.

That's why I'd just like a copy of the law that states as long as I am on public proterty, or taking of picture of public property, or whatever, that I am allowed to.

It doesn't matter what the law is if you get beat up or worse. Some people are protective of their neighborhood and that deserves respect, not confrontation. Maybe let him see some of your pictures so he can see what you're up to.

If he indeed did threaten you with bodily harm he's commited an assault which is unlawful in most every community I have visited. If you intend to go back contact the local authorities and request they contact him with an order to cease and desist. Afterward if you do go back be sure to carry a cell phone. If you're threatened again, dial 911, request help, and stay away until they arrive.

you can take pictures of anything you want, public or private, as long as it is visible to the public (no hoping fences).

i think it is amusing.. the fear people have of the internet.

here are some thoughts i think that people have.
1. if you post a picture on the interent (especially of people), some porno site will take it, alter it.. deface it and post it on their site.
2. if you pay with a credit card over the internet, it is like giving it to a thief (not considering that paying with a credit card at a sleezy gas station gives THEM your number.... )
3. if you say your name or where you are from.. .. people will take that information and do bad things with it....

i guess we live in a society of fear.

but as to a response directly to this thread..
i would agree with the ... leave them alone, and run sudjestion. If they live 5 houses down, you don't exactly want to be enemies with them. regardless of what you can or can't do legally.

I wouldnt worry too much about the legalities of this situation, I'd worry more about pissing off your neighbors and having them destroy your person or property. I use to live 2 houses away from some kids that broke into my house and stole my stuff.

Awesome, thanks for the link. That's exactly what I wanted.

I'm going to go back tomorrow, just because I need it for class. Hopefully he's not there, but if he is, then I'll just show it to him, and hope that he backs away.

Maybe I'll see if I can bring my dad with me, too. He's big.
