Start off with a 3-5 second shutter ap around f/11- f/13 with this technique you get some nice effects from the light trails, If you do not want the trails. You need to set the ap to f/3 or wider depending on lens and speed up the shutter, Fireworks are hard to predict how bright they will be and when they will report so it is kind of hit and miss when you try to capture the explosion with out the light trails.

Be sure to shoot as soon as the fireworks start. Very soon, the smoke will accumulate and if it catches the light from either the city or the fireworks it will look blown out. I've always found the best and cleanest shots are within the first 30 secs of the show.
Also, with the biggest fireworks, they tend to shoot them higher up in the sky than the smaller ones, giving you a second or two to react. When you see the thin light trail from a projectile heading up and up, press the shutter, you will get it just when it explodes. |

F8 and be there.
Sorry, that doesn't help at all. Basically, get a tripod. Go manual mode, open the aparature all the way, set the shutter to something in the seconds (1, 2, 3 seconds). Check the screen and see what you got. Play with the ISO and make sure you shoot in RAW (so you can recover images later).
If it's not a windy day, count on taking pitures in the beginning. If the smoke isn't blown away, it'll cloud up your shot.
It's pretty much Night Photography. |
