I was wondering if anyone has any info on tele extenders. The 70-200 f4L is a tad short, to increase the range I was looking at the canon 1.4 extender. It decreases one stop, is suppose to still autofocus at f4 or lower and supposedly doesn't decrease quality or sharpness.
At $450 australian it certainly seems like a lot of money for what it is (half the price of the 70-200 to begin with).
My questions are -
Are there other brands of these things at a lower price ?
Are they the same quality and do they maintain the quality of original lens (otherwise you are better off with the 70-300 IS) ?
Anyone one had any experience or have any views ?

I've used the sigma 1.4x tc, works great no problems. Want to sell it actually, but I'm guessing shipping it to Oz would be cost prohibitive.

Does the sigma maintain the same things (autofocus, 1 stop difference, quality etc)? Can it be had for cheaper than the canon ?
Routerguy - I know yours is a full frame (the 5D) but what does it boost the 200 to ?

I haven't used it in a long time. It sits here in its box. I used it on the 30d with the 70-200 F4L. Autofocus still worked, image quality was fine, you lose one stop, etc. It was much cheaper than the canon as I recall. 5d or 30D, a 1,4x tc boosts the focal length by 1.4x, so 280mm.

Kenko Teleplus Pro 300 DG x1.4 TC = same (Hoya...I believe) glass as Tamron/Sigma higher end TCs and costs less. Way cheaper than Canons w/o the lens restrictions. Works great with the 70-200mm 4L.

I would agree with the Kenko pro 300 mentioned above. I have one and it works great with my 70-200 2.8. Having a 1.6 crop sensor and 1.4 TC will give you effectively 448mm if I'm not mistaken.

Are the Kenko's available in Australia ? (I haven't heard of that brand). Does the 70-200 f4 L (with converter) still outperform the 70-300IS ?
