But they sure talk funny ;)
We just got back from nearly 6 weeks away; 9 days in NZ, 10 in Sydney and area, and 3 weeks in Melbourne, and it just flew by. I can't believe yet that it's already over!

We only got through a small part of New Zealand's north island but it was enough to make me want to see moremoreMORE. What incredible natural beauty, and wonderful to see how important their history is to their culture and lifestyle.

An internet friend in Sydney, who visited us in Canada last year, was a wonderful host, touring us around the city and into the Blue Mountains to Jenolan Caves. I got to meet another two internet friends in Sydney and we spent a weekend in Scone with yet another and his family, who drove us to Newcastle for the day.

Six years ago another internet couple visited us, and we've been close friends with them for 10 years. They met us in Sydney then drove us to Melbourne. On the way we stayed at Hall's Gap amongst the kangaroos after driving though the mountains, took a riverboat ride in Mildura (where they both grew up) and visited Sovereign Hill in Ballarat.

An overnight trip to Warrambool, at the far end of the Great Ocean Road, made me want to stay longer, and a swim at a surf beach near Geelong made coming home to snow just that much harder.

Aussies are a great bunch (though I already knew that!), and everyone we had contact with helped make our trip memorable. One way or another, I WILL go back!!

I have over 5 thousand photos to sort through and I haven't even looked at them all yet, but I've got a very few up. Here's a sample of the wonder that is Australia. :)

What a trip! I would LOVE to spend a few weeks down there. I spent two days in Cairns, Australia a long time ago. GREAT people!

I don't know how much time I'm going to have before Christmas for editing, but after... well, then you'll see so many shots you'll be sick of 'em! :D

I found the Rotorua area just amazing... there aren't words to describe it.

I envy you. That's my dream vacation. Since I was very young I've wanted to visit that part of the world.

Well, I did find my sense of direction, which is normally very strong, reversed by 180 degrees. I'm sure being down-under was the cause!

It feels strange now to get into the right seat of the car and not see a steering wheel... also have to relearn which direction to check first when crossing the street. It's funny how quickly we adjust to change :)

Great shots. Now I can't wait to see more to see if my desire to go down under will intensify.

Maybe there should be a DPC exchange program where, for example, I swap homes with someone in Australia for a few months.

They get to enjoy a Canadian winter (if such a thing is possible) with the snow and cold and snowmobiles and ice skating and shovelling snow and running the car for twenty minutes before driving it...and I get to avoid the snow and the cold and the etc, etc.

My work is such that I can do most of it via e-mail anyway.

DPC members all over the world could do this kind of thing!

Yes the kiwi's do talk funny. And just like the US the further south you go the stronger the accent becomes. My wife is from Wellington, and after 10 years I still have to say What? to her a few times daily because I have no idea what she said. Takes a bit of adapting, even though it is english it is a different language. First time I was in New Zealand , we went out to eat at a Turkish Kebab House and I asked where is the Bathroom. The waiter looked at me kind of strange and said you can not bathe here sir. I should have asked for the Loo or the Toilet. I have learned alot since then.

Lol, that's funny :) We didn't have any language problems that I know of, tho' some probably snickered after we left.

One thing did drive me crazy, though..... the bloody FLIES!!! I came soooo close to giving into the tacky-tourist look and buying one of those hats with the fake corks hanging down, but pride overcame practicality. I DID quickly learn the "Aussie salute", though!
And I learned the flies like caesar salad and coconut-scented sunscreen.

I thought about trying for something, but hubby's not into photography, dammit, and I subject him to enough already ;) If we'd had longer I'd have tried for it.

Nice photos, my wife and I should be moving to the southern island in a couple of years. We're going there next year for a couple of months too if all goes to plan.

Did you touch the south island at all?

No, we just didn't have long enough, and we want time to actually see things, not just skim over them :( We plan to return, though... loved what we did see soooooo much :)
