Are certain types of brushes not allowed? For example, a brush that creates an effect on your body, or on an object, like cracks for example. Are these legal in Advanced? Expert?

If you look under advanced editing rules, what you don't want is to create any new features. Some of those brushes, like the one that looks like blades of grass, could easily be used to create a new feature, that I assume would be illegal. If it's just a texture on an existing part of the photo that doesn't add anything new, it should be fine, I would think. Maybe site council will chime in here.
Edit to add: there was a fairly heated debate after the Impressionism II challenge regarding some photos that really altered textures, but the photos in question (I'm specifically thinking of the lovely 3rd place) was deemed legal. You may want to look back at that challenge for some guidance.

Any brush is ok as long as it doesn't break another rule.
Obviously, you don't want a brush with text on it. Since it would break the text rule. Also, star brushes have been pretty much determined to be a no-no, because they add features.
