The story is that a Pulitzer Prize winning Associated Press photographer, Bilal Hussein, has been held for 19 months by the U.S. government who claims he is a terrorist who infiltrated the AP. He has taken pictures in Iraq of both sides of the fight, and since both sides includes the insurgent side, the U.S. military says he's a terrorist.

The kicker is that he's going to trial sometime in the near future, only the U.S. military won't tell his lawyer on which day the trial will be. He'll find out at 6:30 a.m. the morning of.

On top of that, the lawyer isn't being told what Bilal is being charged with, or what evidence is being brought against him. So not only will his lawyer not know who to call as witnesses, but he won't know how to defend him.

Isn't the U.S. military supposed to be setting a good example of democracy in Iraq??

How in the world would any millitary set a good example of democracy? A millitary is used to impose your will on others. There's no democracy involved.

AP statement following Bilal Hussein's Dec. 9, 2007 court hearing in Baghdad

From Paul Colford, Director of Media Relations, The Associated Press:

Bilal Hussein and his lawyers have finally had a chance to learn about the allegations that the U.S. military has withheld from them since they imprisoned Bilal 20 months ago. But, they were not given a copy of the materials that were presented today, and which they need to prepare a defense for Bilal. We would hope that we have an opportunity to review the material. There is still no formal charge against Bilal, and The Associated Press continues to believe that Bilal Hussein was a photojournalist working in a war zone and that claims that he is involved with insurgent activities are false. Bilal continues to be detained by the U.S. military.

Because the judge ordered that the proceedings today be kept secret, we are restricted from saying anything further.

from here:

According to the U.S. military, Hussein was arrested in April 2006, when bomb parts and insurgent propaganda were found in his house in Ramadi after the U.S. military asked to use it as an observation post during an operation.[5] The military said that Hussein was found with two insurgents, including Hamid Hamad Motib, an alleged leader of al-Qaida terrorists in Iraq.[1] According to a May 7, 2006 e-mail from U.S. Army Major General Jack Gardner, "He has close relationships with persons known to be responsible for kidnappings, smuggling, improvised explosive device (IED) attacks and other attacks on coalition forces."[1] Gardner continued, "The information available establishes that he has relationships with insurgents and is afforded access to insurgent activities outside the normal scope afforded to journalists conducting legitimate activities."[1]
