In the 2008 FSM (and all FSM's) the only challenges that count toward points are the Regular Monthly Scheduled Free Study challenges. No other challenges count including any extra free study challenges that DPC may introduce during the year.

I know some may be wondering how do I know that DPC will continue having the monthly free study challenges in 2008. I have talked with langdon and he has informed me that DPC has no plans to discontinue the monthly free study challenges. He has given me his OK to announce the 2008 Free Study Marathon.

I Don't understand your question. Any User that is a Member is welcome to participate, Ribbon or Not, in the Free Study Marathon.

I think that she means the competition is going to be fierce with all of the great photographers who are participating and would like to see it split into two divisions ... ribbon winners and non-ribbon winner ...

2008 Free Study Marathon added Information.

I just wanted to let participants and members that are considering signing up for the 2008 FSM about a exciting change.

Point System
Points will be awarded each month to each participant based on their placement. The top score will receive the highest points while the lowest score will receive the lowest points; if a participant does not enter they will receive no points. This stays the same as 2007 FSM.

NEW:
The 2008 FSM will include new column called "FSM vs. Overall Avg Points". These points are not awarded each month but will change each month based on the difference between your Overall Avg (as of Jan. 1, 2008) and your current 2008 FSM Avg. Each month your FSM avg will change, the Member with the best improvement will score the highest points and the Member with the lowest improvement will score the lowest points.

If you have any question feel free to PM me or post in forum.

Thanks,
SDW

I love the idea of improvement of the average.

So tell me if I have this right. If I enter the 2008 free study marathon I get points depending on where I come each month in the free study for that month. If I dont enter a free study I dont get points. These points are only related to the FS Marathon and dont effect any of my DPC points etc.
The marathon is like a challenge in it's own right.

You're right. You get points depending on your position in FS AMONG participants on the FS Marathon.

So the new "bonus column" will be updated monthly so you can see how you are doing..but that column will only be taken into account at the end of the 2008 FSM when the "bonus points" from that column will be figured into the overall points? Is that correct?

If that is correct, will the running standings during the year be totalled "if the FSM ended now" as far as the improvement points go, ie: even though they are not actually added each month, each month's standings will show results which include the year to date effects of the improvement points? what is the minimum # of challenges entered before your starting avg score can be calculated? Obviously if someone has only entered 3 challenges and got an avg score of 4.2 in those three, it is not really enough of a basis to go by.

ETA: I really like this addition, as it gives the improving photographers a chance to make some gains on the "top guns" .

Assuming of course the top guns don't strategize and leave their better shots for later in the year. :P
