Speaking of BW, the new issue just arrived in the mail. Once again jealousy and inspiration are having a heated battle in my brain. You (everyone) should really check it out if you don't already read this magazine.

Sure, let me just make enough money to shell out $7.00 an issue.

I used to get the old issues free at work... those were the days...

35 bucks a year, you can scrape it up. Good investment.

Oh geez, I'm not well versed enough in it, but stuff I see in magazines like "Black and White." The really... you know... artistic stuff...

I'll get back to you on that...

I can tell you from experience if you submit anything along the lines of what you see in B&W you are guaranteed a 5.3.

Yeah. Those darn B&W shots just don't cut it. :-P

Lately my interest in DPC has been fading partly because it seems to now stand for Duplicate Photography Challenge. When I first came here I was wowed by the photographs. Like today a lot of it was stock-ish and based on prior shots but they were appealing in that the photographer's own the shot. They put their stamp on it. Today, creativity is all but dead and inspiration has been replaced with duplication. What's worse, people don't seem to know the difference or even care. It just seems like the bar has been dropped rather than raised and voters don't seem to mind.

Ok I'm done. My first rant! Maybe I just need to see some real good photographs again. Anybody have some?

A lot of the stuff I used to think was original is just ripped off from somewhere else. There aren't a lot of new ideas around and those that are original, people don't like because they haven't seen them before.

Well it's not so much the unoriginal ideas that bothers me it's the ingredient of one's self that is often missing in these images that does. We are all individuals, shaped by our own unique experiences. We should all see the world differently. Just cast that vision into your work is all I ask.

If I gave two children the same toy they would play with it differently. We as adults seem to want to look over our shoulders and see how the other one is using it. I swear it's like we all want to be robots.

I'm answering without reading the rest of the thread, so maybe it's going to be a repeat. But .... I think you're wrong :) Creativity is not dead at DPC. There is a lot of duplication, and a lot of "mediocrity," but there's also a lot of creativity. As you spend more time here, you see the same things over and over, yes, but you also see new stuff, things that just blow you away, where you think, "Wow, that's beautiful! I got to try that!"

I think that the two key ingredients to avoid loosing interest at DPC are: (1) to get away from being so focused on the challenges, but to focus instead on what you want to do; challenges are short term, what you want to do is likely something worth exploring over the long term. (2) to not worry about trying to either "please the masses" or to do things according to the popular accepted perception of what's right or wrong in photography, but to pursue what you see in your mind's eyes, to put into pictures what you want to say with your images.

I think one thing that is both a strength and a drawback of DPChallenge is that it provides access and exposure to so many different people with such varied levels of proficiency. It makes for a wider range of pictures to look at. It also makes it look at times like the pictures here aren't "as good" as pictures at other sites, where you only get "the best" on the front page.

Oh well. These are the musings of someone who's thought very much along the same lines, yet keeps coming back here, because it IS an inspiring and encouraging place, more so than most on the net.

----

Added: And then I read the rest of the thread, and think, hmmmm, why did you just write all that stuff? But, contrary to my natural inclination to delete it and replace with "n/m", I'm not going to, this time. :)

Ok maybe creativity isn't dead. I was just being a little over dramatic to make a point. :)

To clarify, I was referring to the challenge entries in particular. I just think the quality has dropped in general, which in part I blame on the challenge themes with roman nummerals in them, which you may have seen me bitch about on occassion. :)

I do agree the side challenges have produced some exciting images probably because you don't have to worry about DNMC. However, even there it gets repetitive quickly due to the format. Even though it's not required people seem pressured to enter on a regular basis and thus you get a lot of quantity and less quality or harder to find quality. That's the one thing I don't like about that.

Try this thread. There's lots of inspiration there, and many different styles. If it's too overwhelming, try these:

These are four great links, definetely worth a look.

Meet GIR:

He's one of the characters in Invader Zim (a cartoon series). He's Zim's robotic slave, made from spare parts and he's got stuff like paperclips and bubblegum for brains. He's cute. I like Zim better though :))))

LOL. Hmmm, laser eyes or bubble gum brains... I can't decide which would win in a fight. :P

Not sure if it relates or not... I'll be interested to see what we get in the two open challenges this week. In my mind, they're not suited to "set up shots" - more appropriate for making one think how to convey the theme then setting out to "capture" rather than "create". But that's because I tend to shoot that way. I rarely "create" an image for a challenge. I try to find something that fits and capture that.

All that said, carefully created and well executed shots will win, which is not a bad thing. But there may be some interesting images.

Related to this .... the trick, often, seems to be to make carefully created images to look as if they are just captured. Kind of like music, or dancing, it can't sound/look forced. Sometimes it seems though that many images are the other way around, where "just captured" images are presented as "carefully created," much to both the photographers' and commenters' frustration :)

I think they don't know the difference. I spend more hours than I'd like to admit looking at images on the internet and in magazines and I agree that much of it's been done and often better else ware. I'm most curious to see what's out there, what's been done and to try my best NOT to repeat it.

Don (posthumous) suggested that I offer a Self Immolation Award on the Posthumous Ribbon thread based on my recent images performance in Duotones III.

Avg Vote:5.0966 <<< I just broke the 5 barrier. LOL
Comments:3

The award would go to those photographers that don't seem to care about Ribbons and put in images that they know good and well, won't score well. Don't you love those shots???

Let's celebrate them. Cheers!!!

xion, jpr, jj to name a few would all be recipients based on past performance.

YES. YES. YES.

Ursula, I didn't think it was possible, but you've become even more my favorite person!
